Health insurance is a very good question Jacko. Short answer is no, nothing that I could transfer to Thailand. My health in general is ok, a few kilo's overweight, but a non smoker that's about it. To be honest falling ill, or a heart attack when in LOS (either on holiday or in retirement) is something that is of great concern. I am reliably informed that health services in Thailand are adequate, however I have no idea what health insurance costs in Thailand, and if there is a higher rate for farangs? I do assume at this point that health insurance in Thailand would be cheaper than it is here in Australia?
Jacko - do you have any price information on a comprehensive health insurance plan in Thailand?
Perhaps at this point I should disclose a little more of my retirement "plan"..... Yes I am 47 at the moment. I have been "crunching" the numbers in terms of my current assets and factoring in likely investment growth (including) superannuation etc. Assuming everything falls into place (I acknowledge that is a huge assumption) I believe I would be in a position to retire around 63. It is likely I may work onto 65, only to have a surplus of funds. The plan this far out would be to live in LOS for 8 to 10 years - meaning by age 75 I would look to return to Australia to see out my final years.... as my health declines.... Happy to take on board any comments here re this plan!
Cluster
Sounds like a pretty good plan to me cluster...I would imagine that by the time you actually retire...you will be pretty well set. Cheers.

The Deluxe Burger at Dicey Reilly's:
It consists of a thick patty of meat, cheese, bacon, tomato, onions and lettuce, topped with a fried egg. Fried mushrooms, french fries and a tiny dab of coleslaw come with it. The cost was 360 baht.
The patty was grilled nicely and the bun was properly toasted. In all, a good burger and a filling meal.
Evil
They should re-name that burger "The WidowMaker...or "The Coronary".... Don't eat too many of those Evil or I fear we won't be reading many reviews in the future.
It does look good though...:)

I had the same problem on EVA's 777, but there is no box in aisle row G.
PB#1
Cheers for that info PigBoy...much appreciated.
Last trip I switched airlines from Cathay Pacific to Eva as there was a big difference in price between the two airlines for the same seat.
Cathay does not have any protruding IFE boxes in their aisle seating and naturally I didn't give this a thought while booking with Eva only to find my leg room severely hampered on the D aisle seat...and from the looks of it the C aisle seats as well.
I meant to have a look at the G aisle seats...but you know how that goes once you land...you just want to get the hell off the plane as quickly as possible. I checked out the "Seat Guru" websites and couldn't come up with any answers to my dilemma...until I Google'd this question and up popped this thread.
Your info enabled me to save quite a bit of dosh which will be injected back into the resort community economy in the form of beer and women. Thanks again.

The question about a live in girlfriend is valid...especially if she has a kid...and a family. From where I'm sitting...once you let her move in, your expenses are double...and you become responsible for her child/children and all the expenses that go along with her family.
Best to be like gabor...hiring girls 2-3 times a week...than falling in love and watching the drain on your bank account take place b/4 your eyes...school uniforms for the kids, doctor visits, food, dinners with the family....etc...and IMHO...that's the hard part about being an ex-pat...you have to have limits and can't fall in love...
...once you do, your 70-80k baht monthly expenses are out the window and you are...fucked.

I just spent a couple of weeks in a seaview deluxe with a small sofa for approx. 1700 member rate per night...the view was great but, I've seen it all before.
What disturbed me was the paint chipping off the wall over the head of my bed...and don't get me started about the rock hard slab of concrete that they call a mattress...I was forced to drink to excess every evening in order to fall a sleep. I felt like I was Fred Flinstone for Christ sake....
Graffiti etched into the inside elevator doors...I guess Tim Sharkey...or at least one of his admirers...was there... as his name is deeply gouged into the door for all to pay tribute to.
The only thing that remains constant at the Sandy is the staff...they are still top notch...but, after many years of patronage, it is time to move on. Cheers

Desmond, you and Molly could try the Ma Maison, just down the soi a little. They have different grade rooms, but they do have a pool. I like soi 13 and have stayed at ma Maison more than Sandy spring.
Excellent food at the Ma Maison. You don't hear too much about the restaurant but they have a great menu and a big wine list. I like the place.

Thanks for the pictorial report Patna.

I prefer Beefeaters for that in Pattaya.
Beefeaters is tops in my book. Café New Orleans serves a great flank steak too.

Shell company…..buy one. Lease one.
At these prices that's highly unlikely... http://www.boeing.com/boeing/commercial/prices/

Must be easier, less conspicuous ways of getting hold of a plane.
OK...what are they?
-
Yeah well in the 'Western World ' 3 out of 4 aircraft achieved their targets and NONE of them was blown out of the sky.
eeegadz, that was then...this is now....it's a different era.

Mis-information and keeping us in the dark makes some sense if a hostage rescue or deal is taking place……… I'm sure most reputable news outlets would play along, but not all of them. Someone somewhere would leak a scoop.
In as far as more is known about all this than we are being told I think that must be true.
The scenario you mention is certainly possible...but, I think the "pirates" have something more nefarious in mind. I don't think the pirates are in it for the ransom of passengers.
I think the aircraft will be used in a SEA 9/11 scenario. If there is a dirty bomb out there...they will load it up and fly the plane right into KL's Twin Towers...It's probably the only location in the world that the aircraft would stand a chance of flying 3 or 4 hours unnoticed and have a chance of carrying out the objective. In the western world... the aircraft would/should be blown out of the sky as soon as it shows up on radar.

. that would have been the flight that exploded at 35k feet
There is no evidence that there was any explosion.
Wish we could all stop speculating and wait for some facts.
if the plane didn't explode at 35k feet...what do you think happened to the plane? Of course it exploded.
777..."the safest plane in aviation history"... http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/08/malaysia-airlines-experts-surprised-at-disappearance-of-very-safe-boeing-777
excerpt from link...."Its safety record is impressive – the first fatal crash in its 19-year history only came in July 2013, when an Asiana Airlines jet landed short of the runway in San Francisco. Three of the 307 people aboard died, one of whom was hit by an emergency truck after surviving the crash."
imho...there will be no black box find...it was blown into a billion pieces along with the plane at 35k feet. No wreckage, no oil slick...no plane.
-
I thought black boxes emitted a tracking signal for a few weeks?
With all the modern technology available in 2009...It still took 2 years to find the Air France jet.
a quote I heard last night..."the sea will not give up it's secrets easily".
It's becoming clear to me that the flight to Beijing was an unfortunate twist of fate for the passengers. If "Mr. Ali" could have booked a cheaper flight to "Europe" via Manila or Taipei or any other route... that would have been the flight that exploded at 35k feet.
Looks to me that a new undetectable explosive has been invented.
