  1. As per the title. Will you double up next year if you can, or maybe have a lot more to spend and play with and maybe splash out a bit?. Maybe that side trip you've always wanted, or even perhaps extending beyond your usual stay?. I've mentioned elsewhere that the budget for my trip this year is going to act as a cushion if anything goes wrong, but once the uncertainty is more or less a thing of the past, I intend to use it and maybe add a bit more to it for next years trip. If nothing else this whole saga has perhaps taught us all that anything can indeed happen, out of the blue.
  2. 38 dead according to the website, plus some worrying news coming out of London regarding how close the UK was to defaulting at the start of all this. FTSE been depressed all day as well.
  3. Nope. Thailand closed to international arrivals until 30 June. Any "Thai" planes you might see are either repatriation flights, or possibly aircraft going for storage somewhere, or maintenance.
  4. If you arrive from outside Thailand then you'll be put in prison, because the only way you would get in at the moment without the relevant criteria being met ( legally repatriated) then you'd have to have been a stowaway and as such an illegal immigrant. I don't think the Thai authorities take too kindly at illegal entry, probably less so by foreigners in the current climate. The reality has already been mentioned here, but in answer to your hypothetical question, then the outcome above is probably the only feasible one. You could maybe hypothesise the following: An aircraft fly
  5. As MLC said, it's not just Expedia doing this, bear in mind all of a sudden these companies saw a sudden stop of cashflow, coupled with demands for bookings made over the last year to be returned. I don't think any company has the financial strength to weather that kind of a storm. It is a sad fact of life and I feel your frustration, that the people on the end of a phone in these places have a pre written "refund script" which they use in order to delay, then dissuade people from pursuing it further. Very often it is older people who fall for this tactic. You did well to get a refun
  6. It seems a very seldom replied to section (2013 by the looks of it), would it not be better archived somewhere and replaced with something new to inject some new discussion and topics ?. I understand the topics were posted by Martin and are all locked. Perhaps a new "archive" or "Epic threads from the past" section would be made up?. Maybe open up a thread for discussion and a vote?. Do we need any more or new sub forums on PT?. Just throwing an idea around...
  7. I mentioned elsewhere, with the uncertainty in the private sector not only in the UK but Europe and possibly Worldwide, not going on holiday this year sucks big time, but the money I would have used for that is going to act as a cushion if it all does go south. Many people in the UK have foregone their hols but instead spunked out on new cars, home improvements or other stuff, a lot of it probably frivolous and not needed. It's their choice of course, but I was always brought up to keep some money aside for a rainy day. Maybe we need this year away from Pattaya in order to re assess
  8. As did I, but I didn't open the link as the headline of the email was all in Thai. In the UK media , BA Senior management is really getting a hard time over the treatment of the employees, who (the management) in turn are blaming the Govt for not relaxing the rules on flying and distancing, it's like a never ending circle of blame.
  9. In that case I don't fit into any of those categories 555
  10. I think the quarantine thing will be knocked on the head, Rawhide mentioned it earlier and I'm inclined to agree with him. On the form, just put that you're an Uber or Lorry / delivery driver, then you are effectively exempt. they have no way of checking if you state that you are self employed, the resource just is not there. I'd be more concerned with turning up in LOS, then being at the mercy of the Thermometer Nazis who might stick you in a state sanctioned hotel for 2 weeks with a worn out copy of Razzle from 1985.
  11. LK Royal Wing at the top of Bukhao is my choice, very quiet, near to money changers and the New Plaza cut thru, and a baht bus ride away from LKM. Rates from 1400-1700 per night, and the rooms are pretty good as well, nice rooftop pool but not much by way of loungers.
  12. You've got good reason to be optimistic. I don't want to hijack Brown1050's thread, and maybe he can give a bit of insight as I understand he is in the trade, but June / July seem to be the months on everyone's lips at the moment. August / Sept are a long time away, and an awful lot can happen in that time. As I said earlier, Airlines are in the business of making money, and if it means that a lucrative route such as LHR-BKK becomes active , then from a commercial standpoint it makes sense to adjust plans as needed. Again, sorry Brown1950 for a bit of a hijack mate.
  13. Thanks Brown, appreciate the updates fella. Marleyboy, I still think your trip will go ahead, Sept is a good way off and although a lot will be changing, hopefully you'll get a holiday. I think that on the busy routes the Airlines are being quite dynamic in their approach. I'm not expert and merely speculating, but I would imagine that a daily direct from LHR-BKK is going to be busy most of the year and a fairly lucrative route, so if needed changes can possibly be made at relatively short notice. Just my opinion though might well be wrong on that.
  14. Have they said which flight, afternoon or evening?.
  15. Sums it up very accurately. The testing and tracing is a joke. We had a local car park turned into a testing facility, drive by at any given time of day, it is empty or perhaps has 2 or 3 cars. The Mcdonalds drive thru has more custom. I read recently that the testing isn't being done correctly, the nasal swab needs to go right up the cavity, which is bloody uncomfortable even when they just stick it up an inch or so, let alone all the way. Like the old "umbrella treatment" and equally as unpleasant. The mask issue was always a disguised attempt at as you say, stopping a huge spike i
  16. For UK veiwers, I watched "What's the matter with Tony Slattery?" - still on iplayer and Sky Catchup A very moving and interesting doc. How he went from a good looking guy into a total and utter wreck.
  17. If you look at the "exceptions" to the list, I think it would not be too difficult to make yourself one of them, Self Employed Lorry driver for one. I don't think they have any way of checking credentials there and then, so you could effectively say you worked for yourself and contracted to any number of Supply chains. I think that Uber, Taxi driver and Bus driver fall into that category. https://immigrationbarrister.co.uk/who-is-exempt-from-the-14-day-coronavirus-quarantine-period/ "road haulage workers and road passenger transport workers;" bottom line, get yourself a tenuous
  18. I looked at the potential list of "Air Bridges" yesterday, Thailand not listed.
  19. There is talk of negative interest rates here (not sure how that would work). This current stress will seriously weaken the Sterling. I think Torrenova said a while ago that we should be basing our figures on 25 baht to the pound. I think we can all agree, none of us saw the irony in that statement. I'll have even money on the lowest ever recorded sterling to baht within the next 5 weeks. I'm going with 33.8 as a bottom line.
  20. Oddly, TG917 flew LHR-BKK last night.
  21. just this minute checked the TT site. GBP : 38.75 USD : 31.73 AUD : 20.58 EUR : 34.60 Lastly, RUB : 0.33 Ouch. They can open the doors tomorrow, but at 38.7 baht I won't be bloody going there!.
  22. In one way this may actually be advantageous . Having a National Carrier going to the wall is bad PR, the Govt bailing them out then puts pressure on the Govt to see that same National Carrier remain in business without hemorrhaging cash over a sustained period. There may be increased pressure on the CAAT from the Govt to re open the routes sooner than the expected June 30, or perhaps (I'm not sure who is answerable to who in that equation) a relaxing of the border closure from the Govt. I am of course speculating here, but with neighbouring Countries like Vietnam beginning to e
  23. I think it's across the board, the GBP has dropped to 61.6 against the php, well over 10% since all this started.
  24. Genuine giggle at that one Bullfrog ? If nothing else, the effectiveness of these systems is a very impressive feat of engineering!.
  25. Can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to Marleyboy, without getting into another Covid thread, I think the Airlines are looking to resume operations in whatever form as soon as they can. Also, worth bearing in mind that an Airline can change a route, reinstate a service and deploy crews at fairly short notice.
