Hi all,

Well, I gave the idea about staying at the INN House a miss. All the stories about the consruction noise scrared me off.

I then e-mailed the Sabai Lodge about one of their Standard rooms for 800 baht. They are all booked out for November.

But I was offered a Superior B room for 850 baht without breakfast (who wants breakfast anyway?)

I told them I didn't want to supply my credit card details and would pay cash. Not a problem.

I always wanted to try the Soi 2 area for a change and I'm sick of shitholes like the Bay Breeze, Apex, Lek Hotel, Honey Lodge, Inntown Hotel and a few others.

I could be wrong, but the Superior B room at the Sabai Lodge has got to be an improvement. One thing puzzles me. Why was I given a much lower rate than what is quoted on their website. Is there anything I should know which isn't kosher? I told them I was staying for two months.

After all those trips I'm still confused about Twin and Double beds. What is the difference. I want one big double bed in my room and not two singles. Can anyone help?

The girl (Care) at the Sabai Lodge doing the e-mail is very good. She sent me three messages in one day and writes excellent English. A lot better than some of the blokes on this list.

I might have to ask a few more questions. What's the shit about rooms with no windows? I don't want to live in a dungeon. Has anyone stayed at a Superior B room at the Sabai Lodge?

Cheers

Gonzo :D

I stay at Mike's Beach on Soi 4 and they only charge me 600 a night for 3-4 week stays. They always place me in one of their upper floors which provides a view of the bay and the room has all glass windows (about 6 meters) opening onto a balcony. The bed is a kingsize and they have never asked me for any credit card details.

No catch with the lower rate. They do this all the time.

There may still be some construction work going on by the new Sabai Wing, but I doubt if you'll hear anything from the Superior rooms. I don't know about this no windows bit, but the window in the Superior room I stayed in was on the small side and there's no balcony.

Oh, and twin beds is two singles.

be seeing you

Monkeyman,

Thanks for the info. A small window is better than no window. If the rooms are too dark I will amble over to Big C and purchase some stronger lightbulbs. That should at least allow me to read the newspaper, whilst the hired help watches some idiotic Thai soap opera on the telly.

I hope they have decent-size refrigerators. There is a good selection of smallgoods over at the Big C supermarket. I always get the munchies when I get home late at night with a bellyful of Singha.

Cheers

I almost always stay on soi 2 and I prefer it, one warning though it is not a good idea to pull from the Soi two beer bar complex if you are staying on Soi 2.

I was at Sabai lodge last month and it's great, the rooms are clean and nice. Every room has it's own safe and there are three swimming pools.

Our Superior rooms both had big beds not twins, but then again we asked.

You'll love it.

I'm thinking about trying Peace resort next time

Gonzo,

I stayed in a superior B room at Sabai Lodge, I think. It was on the second floor near the big pool. King size bed, but no bath tub. Anyway, I had a good time there. No problems whatsoever. If you decide you want the breakfast buffet next door, I think it's around 100 baht.

Bass,

Thanks for the advice about the beds. I will send a message to the articulate e-mail girl (Care) and ask for a large bed. I'm 6'3" and have some ligament damage in my left knee. I might get it checked in the nearby Pattaya International Hospital. There is no way I'm going to put up with a small single bed.

Actually, I have learned to put up with the pain. A few cans of Singha and half a pill of Cialis normally does the trick.

Bass, did you manage to do the train trip down to Koh Samui?

Cheers

Rex,

Thanks for all the positive feedback from you guys. I'm now really looking forward to my trip over there next Tuesday. It's only a five hour flight from my domicile here in Darwin. This is my sixth trip to Thai and I usually stay about 6-8 weeks.

I like the King-size bed, but I hate bathtubs. I nearly killed myself in the Bay Breeze, when I slipped in the tub after a night on the piss a couple of years ago. I had a bad cut on my head and broke six ribs. It fucked my holidays for a couple of weeks.

Cheers mate

Yes I did but I don't recomend it, either taking the train or going to Koh Samui. From Pattaya it was a full 24 hours of traveling.

As a side note I found Koh Samui boring. Next time I'll try Phuket.

Bass,

Thanks again for the info. I have a German mate who lives in Koh Samui. He is always asking me to pay him a visit. I will give it a miss now.

I like Hua Hin and Chiang Mai though and will travel there again by bus. I like travelling on the aircon buses in Thailand.

Sabai Lodge is very good. And Khun Care is the manager. She and the entire staff are very helpful. My advice is to take the room. If you don't like it change to another as others become available.

About Mike Beach Resort on Soi 4. Yes, it's a good hotel. HOWEVER, the derelict skeleton of a hotel adjacent has finally been taken over by a company that is busy finishing it as a condominium. The noise is terrible for those in the Mike Beach Hotel. I am in a condo on the other side of Soi 4 so am not bothered. I feel sorry for those in the hotel. And the noise continues into the night.

Roy,

I have already booked the Superior B room and I will arrive late on Tuesday night. According to the map on their website, the Superior B rooms are located close to Soi 1, away from the noisy bars on Soi 2.

I think I remember Soi 2 being a one-way Soi (Second Rd. to Beachroad). Which is the nearest Soi going the other way (Beach Road to Second Road)? I want to be able to give the taxi driver precise directions. I don't want to cart my luggage all the way to the reception from Beach Road. Half the lunatics don't know their way around Pattaya.

Where did Khun Care learn how to write such good English? Most other reception staff's e-mails are akin to bargirl messages, totally incomprehensible.

Cheers

Don't worry, Your taxi driver will know. Just make sure they take you to Sabai Lodge and not Sabai inn, across the street and down a bit. Are you taking a taxi directly from the airport? If you are I'm sure that Sabai lodge can arange it to meet you.

Bass,

Yes, I'm going directly from the airport and I'm arriving late tomorrow night. I couldn't be bothered to waste a night in Bangkok.

I would use the Sabai Inn's taxi service, but I'm not willing to give any credit card details over the Internet. I know of too many people who had their fingers burned. I don't think Secure Visa On-line has caught on in Thailand yet.

It's easy enough to get a taxi at the airport. I normally grab on of the newer, yellow Camrys for about 1500 baht and I look for a driver without any glazed look in his eyes.

I once finished up with a doped-up lunatic in an old Volvo. I had all sorts of problems trying to stop the cunt from falling asleep. I had to grab the steering wheel a couple of times to stop him from running off the road.

Well When I talked with management on my last trip (Sept-04) they said that it would be done by the beginning of Oct-04. When I left on 3-Oct-04, it did not look like it was anywhere near completion. This is the new 6-story structure.

Emil, the Charming Inn has had the exterior painted...the same lousy color. Haven't been inside. I hope they are doing a decent renovation as the hotel was a bit....um....dated. The new hotel or whatever going up behind it has a loooong way to go. Poor construction materials and tortoise slow workers.

The Mike Orchid Hotel addition is coming along nicely, though it will be some time before it is finished. Haven't quite finished closing it in yet, and the interior work will take some time, but it looks like it will match the first section, and that is good. I am sure good introductory prices will be offered when it does open. I would guess it will be late in'05 before it opens.

Gonzo, the nearest Soi going from Beach Rd. to Second Rd. is Soi 3. Frankly, most taxis don't pay much attention to the one-way signs, and I am sure your taxi guy knows how to get there.

  • 3 weeks later...

I stayed at Sabai Lodge in October. Had a Ruenthai Pool room, which opens right onto the pool. It was a bit pricey at 1900B, but very nice. Minor complaint: not enough shelf space in bathroom. Room was clean, AC worked well, staff very pleasant. No guest problems.

Did not really try the restaurant. Had breakfast there one day, and it was OK, but you can get a better one at the LEK hotel for less money.

Overall, would recommend again.
