Guest friendly BKK Suk Hotels - Updated July 20, 2009

Recommended Posts

Here are some suggestions for hotels in the Bangkok Sukhumvit area, ranging from budget to five-star. The smaller budget ones are clean , secure and you can get nice rooms for between 1,400 baht and about 2,000 baht, depending on the type of room and hotel. This list is by no means exhaustive. There are plenty of others that have been widely written about, I've tried to add a few that aren't as well known. Because I have included the links, I'm not going to write in detail about each hotel. The Royal Ivory is down the street from the Nana Hotel and NEP, while the Ever Rich Inn is between Suk Soi 5 and Soi 7 and the Stable Lodge is on Soi 8. The others are farther away ( on Soi 19, Soi 18 and Soi 33, respectively), but still within easy BTS or taxi distance of NEP and walking distance to Soi Cowboy.

If you just use your hotel room for a few hours sleep and to screw, you're probably better off at the Nana, Majestic Suites or Manhattan (assuming you can get a room, sometimes difficult these days). But if you want a room to chill out in for a few hours a day, some of the smaller hotels offer better value for money. I had a big room with a full kitchen (stove, fridge, microwave) at the Royal Ivory Nana for 1,800 baht/night. I used it for a party with five ladies, even though I had a room at a five-star hotel. It wasn't convenient to bring back five ladies to that room because I had colleagues staying at the same hotel. Besides, the ladies and I had a lot of fun cooking dinner together.

If you want something a bit more comfortable, you can book a jacuzzi suite at the Town Lodge (3,200b/night) or Livingstones (4,000b/night).

The following is a booking agency that specializes in budget accommodation and can often find you a room when others can't.

Thai Hotel Discounts

If you are in Bangkok on business or prefer a larger full-service hotel, the "Big Three" guest friendly hotels in the Sukhumvit area are the Sheraton Grande, JW Marriott and the Westin. The Landmark is also very guest friendly. These hotels will run you anywhere from $120 to $180 and more, depending on what kind of discount rate you're entitled to or if you catch a promotional price.

Other upscale choices include:

President Solitaire

A bit out of the way on Soi 11, but absolutely no problem to get a taxi day or night. However, if I couldn't get a Platinum Suite with giant jacuzzi and kitchen (5,100B/night), I doubt I'd want to stay at the PS.

Emporium Suites

Great swimming pool, well-equiped kitchen, right at Emporium shopping center and BTS station.

Davis Hotel

Again, a bit out of the way, but huge value for money.

Dream Hotel Bangkok

The coolest hotel in BKK, opened in October, 2006. All the TGs loved the Dream Suite (about $300 U.S./night- company paid). Several called relatives/friends just to come look at the suite.

I like the Majestic Suites around the corner from Nana Hotel. Clean with in room safe. Westin is another good property.

Thanks for the nice list...

I almost stayed at the Town Lodge... I did a drive by with my Taxi.

I can not understand why the Town Lodge is always recommended. It is so far down the soi... way way too long a walk just to get to Suk for me. This is from someone who walks all over the place. I am sure the hotel is very nice but I thought I would mention the location issue just so everyone understands this before they book.

Hi

I'm a near-novice regarding bkk - just one 3-day trip (I stayed at Woraburi, soi 4). I'm now planning another trip fo 10 days next month, maybe longer if I'm enjoying myself.

I intend to divide my tourism between culture (royal palace etc) and women (nana etc). My budget wouldn't run to more than 15-1800 a night for the room. (breakfast/restaurant or a pool are of no interest to me.) Would anyone suggest a particular hotel that fits well - good transport connexion to destinations, guest-friendly? Is the nana area easy for bts transport to the tourist centre?

In the meantime thanks a lot for your list.

Here's the Web site for the CitiChic Hotel for more detailed info, prices and reservations. For comparison, here's the Web site for the Majestic Suites. I paid 2,500 baht a night at CitiChic for a Double Deluxe room with a small terrace. The same-sized room without terrace is 2,300 baht/night. The CitiChic only has those two types of rooms and the price includes breakfast for two. The MS has four types of rooms, ranging in price from 1,315 baht to 2,050 baht/night. The difference has to do with the size of the room, whether it has a bath tub and whether you get one or two breakfast coupons,

The map is a bit misleading because it gives the impression that CitiChic is closer to the Suk than it is, but it indicates the general area.

I have booked into the Majestic Suites for my February trip. I have never stayed there before. I considered the Nana but the number of negative reviews I read put me off. I am still handy for the Car Park later in the evening :banana

Don't believe all the negative stuff about NANA. They have some of the best beds in all of thailand that you will find in a hotel less than 4000 baht. (jw marriot, shreaton etc) The nana has latex mattresses and there are backrests built into the headboards if you want to sit in bed and watch TV. After staying at whitehouse hotel in pattaya and winding up with a fucked up back (whitehouse has repleced their mattresses with cheap shit hard as concrete crap mattresses) I went to BKK with Hawk and stayed at NANA for one night. Next day my back was better. BTW some fucking asshole mattress company rep must have been making the kickback sell all over thailand. Several hotels have changed out their mattresses to rock hard cheap shit crap in the last 6 months. As far a I am concerned whitehouse wasz dodgy booking before, now with crap mattresses I would not stay there if you paid me.

Nana also has a great breakfast buffet. I have stayed at sheraton grande**, majestic suites, majestic grande*, dynasty, dynasty grande*, westin grande**, swiss grotino*, residence gardens, sandy springs*, siam bayshore*, hard rock, marriot**, jw marriot**, whithouse ccondotel, mercure, radjaphruk, bel-air princess*. siam city hotel*, soffitel silom**, silver springs hotel, jomtiem boathouse, nana mansions, and a few other i can't remember and the NANA** rates in my top 5. hotels with decent beds are marked by a *. great beds are **

The majestic suites are good but I will bet that you go across the street for breakfast buffet at the NANA at least once and pay 200 baht for what is included in the 1290 baht rate.

cheers

I have stayed in the President Solitaire a few times and it is very nice and quiet. Stayed in all rooms at one time or another and prefer the Solitaire suites as the bathroom leads off the bedroom and they are close to the pool. Good security in this hotel. One point: When it rains about half the Soi gets flooded unless they have fixed the drains which I doubt. It is about a ten minute walk up onto Sukhumvit road although they do provide a free shuttle service for guest. This is pretty expensive place but I feel worth the money. <huh

So far, I've stayed at, Majestic Suites (twice) Omni Suites, the Pelican on Soi 22 and this trip I will be staying at the Nana. I've always wanted to stay there, but it was full every other time I tried to book.

All were guest friendly, and no problem bringing multiple ladies to your room.

I also like the CitiChic, but for purely mongering purposes, the Majestic Suites is a better value because it's around 900 baht/nt cheaper, and located at ground zero. But the rooms are MUCH bigger and also nicer at the CitiChic.

I might also add, in addition to the "Big 3" of the JW Marriott, Westin, and Sheraton Grande, The Plaza Athenee is also a great choice, and it's located around 100 meters from the Ploenchit BTS station on Wireless Road. It's actually my preferred choice among upscale full service hotels, if I want to be slightly removed from the action around NEP and Soi Cowboy for the purpose of either business, or meeting with non-pro females. Like, the Westin and Sheraton, it's a Starwood property (and, as a Cat 3, I think it's nicer than the Westin).

The list below is an update and expansion of the OP. It is intended as source of information about guest-friendly hotels in the Bangkok's Sukhumvit area. Its purpose isn't to review any of the hotels, but to note what's available in various price classes. If you want further information about a particular hotel, click on the link to go its Web site or search the board for comments, reviews, etc.

I've listed the hotels in price order - from cheapest to most expensive - and divided them into two geographical areas - Closer to Nana Plaza and Closer to Soi Cowboy - with Sukhumvit Soi 13 as the line of demarcation. This list is by no means exhaustive. There many other hotels in the vicinity and quite a few are guest friendly.

Whenever possible, I've hot-linked to the hotel's official Web site. If the hotel doesn't have its own site, I've linked to a web page that has information, pictures, etc. on the hotel.

All are guest friendly, meaning that an unregistered guest can stay overnight in your room without extra charge. However, some will charge you a joiner fee if you want to bring back two or more ladies at the same time. There's no reason to get hysterical about a joiner fee. It's a hotel policy, not a crime against humanity. Use a common sense approach. If your style of mongering involves heavy partying in your room with three or four ladies at once, then be sure to stay in a monger friendly hotel. But if you usually take back just one lady per night, then guest friendly is OK. Should you decide one night to indulge in a threesome and the hotel asks for a joiner's fee of 300 baht for the extra lady - pay it. It's no big thing.

There are dozens of hotel booking agencies, all roughly the same in terms of prices offered and service. I've listed three specialist agencies below. If you don't need the services of a specialist, you're just as well off booking your room through the hotel-booking function affiliated with this board.

Thai Hotel Discounts is great if you need personal service, especially for last-minute reservations or if you have very specific requests. Tim (the owner) knows exactly which hotels are good for mongers and which aren't. He can usually find something to suit every budget. So if you are looking for a monger-friendly hotel in the Nana area at 2,500 a night with a swimming pool that gets a lot of sun, has WiFi, a gym and a breakfast buffet, call up Tim and ask him what he recommends. He'll always steer you right.

LateStays.com and CheckInToday.com are good online options for last-minute reservations. Both offer big discounts and CheckInToday gives you an answer in real time on the same day as you need the room. It's been extremely useful when I've had to extend my stay one more day or I've check out of a hotel sudden;y because it was unsatisfactory.

DISCLAIMER: The prices listed are indicative as of November, 2008 and include taxes and service charges. They represent prices that are widely available, but lower prices can sometimes be found because of special promotions. Keep in mind that many online agencies don't include taxes and service charges, which makes their rates appear 17% lower than they really are. Always read the fine print about what is included in the price given.

But I have to agree with the poster below:

I stayed in the Town Lodge last year - BIG walk (I also walk miles in BKK regularly) for a clean but mediocre room in need of an update. It does have an interesting bar/lounge

In September I've stayed in the Honey House Inn 2 on Soi 22 @890 baht/ night. Sorry to say, but I wasn't impressed. Lady from reception very friendly and all, but rooms small, too old, too noisy. For the budget traveller only.

Years ago stayed at the Promenade soi 8, same story but even worse than Honey House Inn. Maybe Promenade has been updated/ upgraded since then.

For the last 3 years I've always stayed (2/ 3 times/ year) at Centre Point Petchburi, opposite Pantip Plaza. Prices have gone up from 1800 baht (2006) to 2600 baht in 2009. Still worth it in my opinion. Taxi to Soi Cowboy of Nana 60 baht (in rush hour more expensive due to traffic jams and not every taxi wants to go there, but there's always a cabbie who does..), 10 to 15 minute walk to CWP and Big C. Eventually can get Skytrain @Chid Lom and go to Nana or Asok. Might be to complicated for some, but okay for me.

Good list, thanks for putting in the effort, Evil. I'd just like to add that I used to stay in the Majestic Suites when it was new, but in the last couple of years I never seem to be able to get a booking as they became more popular and are always full. I've been staying in the Parkway for the last few years, and generally enjoy it, iit's a friendly little place and I like the rooms. This month I stayed in room 703, which has just been renovated with a huge shower stall, really nice - also a good view of one side of Nana Plaza, but far enough up that the noise doesn't bother me even if I am home from the bar early(uncommon for me!!)

I was paying 1400 a night, just like last visit, although they do have one suite on the top floor which is a little more - I stayed there once but can't remember, maybe 1800? It's not much bigger than the other rooms anyway. And the location is great, I just get my driver to drop me off and pick me up in the Landmark's parking lot next door.

As for some of the others, I stayed at TownLodge once and wasn't impressed, smallish room and quite out of the way; Livingtone's didn't do anything for me either, room was starkly furnished with nowhere to put my suitcase and not even any pictures on the wall, and they charge a 10% "service charge" on everything there including the room; I checked out in disgust after two days of my four day reservation. I've been a little suspicious of these so-called "boutique" hotels ever since.

My flight out on the 5th was cancelled, and I found out about the gov't putting stranded travellers up for free at the Imperial Queens Park Hotel on Soi 22; I went there and got four days for free, quite a treat as the regular room cost is 6000b a night. Normally I do not like these big hotels, though - I like the smaller, friendlier ones like the Parkway. Interestingly, I thought this place would be picky about "guests", but I was dragging girls home every night and they never even looked at me, didn't ask for ID cards or anything. Maybe it was because I was never home before 5 or 6 in the morning, having too much fun at the Sukhomvit street bars. :banghead

I go to Thailand maybe 2-4 time's a year. I like the Majestic Suites. It is getting very hard to get a room now. I stayed at the Nana Hotel last trip. No hot water and they tried to fix it several times. i wanted another room but desk told me "No Rooms". They tried to fix the hot water again then moved me to another room (no Room). I call the Nana the 'Star Wars Hotel" It is great fun to see who is there in the morning when everyone is going home. The parking lot is a good pick up spot. The morning breakfast is good. Majestic Suites is still my favorite. I tend to get out od Bangkok fast now and go to Pattaya. Much better and more fun.

Take Care and cover up
