Sport shop upstairs at Big C has a decent enough collection ....... check out their flyer at the top of the escalator for any current promotions. Also Big C, Tesco and Carrefour have cheap and cheerful models.

Cheap and cheerful to be sure. I bought one from Tesco 3 months ago and have been relatively pleased with it. I was given the choice of one at 5150 baht and one at around 3800 baht. When I enquired as to what the difference was, I was told to sit on them. The more expensive had better springing, so that is the one I chose. Since I bought it I have had two small problems. First with the brakes...apparently it was fitted with plastic parts which weren't up to standard. I had them replaced at a cost of 500 baht at a shop on Thepprasit Rd. Secondly I had a problem with a clicking sound on changing down from say 4th to 3rd. I had to go down to 2nd then back up to 3rd to eliminate the sound. Yesterday I took it to another shop on Thepprasit Rd. and they changed the chain at a cost of 350 baht. That seems to have fixed it. Another problem with these cheap bikes is that they are very prone to rust and it's a good idea to spray with WD40 or similar every now and again. Perhaps the best option would be to buy from one of the shops halfway along Thepprasit Rd., as they specialise, and would presumably rectify any small problems such as I had. You would pay more there but get better quality. I think I would have got no joy if I took it back to Tesco. Same would apply at Big C and other similar stores.

I race the m/bikes here, and depending where u live in naklua try namchai bikes down the fish market end of sukumvit on the east side if the rd u will see old bikes out the front there is a walk overpass near a T section traffic lights.he arranges the races in the area

OR S.V.bikes in thepprasit rd opp entance to go karks and bungy, on the corner, nice lady runs it with husband, both places have good quality second hand and new bikes, depending on how much u want to pay,

repairs are bugger all,u mainly pay for parts and they do labor almost free,

my bottom braket broke today on budda hill so i am off there now, nomaly open 8.30am till 8pm,their second hand bikes are far betterthan the ones u get in big c type stores,or there are 2 other shops opp S.V

Yes, those from Tesco and BigC are awful.

I wouldn't take any of them off road. Prefer to have one without all that ridiculous 'suspension' plus knobbly tires slowing me down.

If you just want cheap, forget about the suspension and check that the brakes are reliable and aren't flexing around in the wind.

The rest is negotiable.

it's a good idea to spray with WD40

Big mistake if you meant spraying WD40 on chain or sprockets - this will dry out the drivetrain and cause the chain lag another poster mentioned having a problem with. Get some good chain lube, or just simple motor oil - lube the chain - then wipe it down several times with a clean rag - too much lube will attract dirt.

I now use what the thais use its called pedros ICE WAX chain lube ,best stuff i have ever used, collects little or no sand and dirt and keeps chain clean,i have not seen it in OZ.

This is good advice, but you can use WD40 to clean a chain - it removes dirt gunge etc like magic. Then clean the chain and lube as above.

Is there anywhere to rent a bike in Pattaya. I'm a cyclist (time trials etc) and often feel the need to pedal whilst there.

Is this board fantastic - it now includes advice on bicycle chain lubrication !.
