October/November Golf Festival

Recommended Posts

The RideHer Cup is already a Pattaya legend and it forms the nucleus of a 2 to 3 week programme of fun golf events. This post contains details of what's happening during the October/November golf festival so that you can plan your holiday around the events.

With Loy Krathong falling on Monday 2nd November, we have decided to move the RideHer Cup from its traditional slot of first Monday in November. This has had an impact on the programme so here is the first draft:

Friday 30th October - an informal practice day at Burapha to warm up for the RideHer Cup.

Sunday 1st November - registration evening for the RideHer Cup and all the other events at the golf festival. We will also be handling registrations at our office before and after this date.

Monday 2nd November - 3 clubs and a putter competition. Wi came up with the idea of a fun event where players can only carry a selection of 3 clubs and a putter. 2 person teams competing in a stabelford better- ball format. We will book a course near to Pattaya and hold the prizegiving early. This will give the players plenty of time to celebrate Loy Krathong.

Tuesday 3rd November. Steve O has asked me to remind everyone that it is Melbourne Cup Day! We will find a venue to watch the race. In the evening, we will meet at FLB for the Captains to announce the RideHer Cup teams.

Wednesday 4th November. RideHer Cup Day. This is the eighth year and the format is well known to many of you. We have booked Burapha A and B course for a 10.30 tee time off two tees. Transport will depart this year from Central Pattaya at 0900. The prizegiving and party will take place in FLB in the evening.

Friday 6th November. The Misty's Open. Individual Stabelford Competition. I am still looking at the venues. I am playing Eastern Star this weekend so we will go ahead with them if the course is in decent condition after their work on some of the greens.

Sunday 8th to Wednesday 11th November. A 3 night road trip with two rounds of golf. The suggestion is to go to Soi Dao Highlands on the Sunday and stay 2 nights. Play golf on Monday and Tuesday and then transfer to Koh Samet for one night. Return to Pattaya on Wednesday late afternoon. We can also visit the Casino in Cambodia if anyone is interested. Please post here with your views on this trip.

Thursday 12th November. Baby Dolls Texas Scramble. 4 man team Scramble/Ambrose at Siam Plantation followed by a party at Baby Dolls.

Week commencing 16th November. I will arrange 3 golf days this week. If there are enough people still in town I can run a couple of competitions during these days.

That's where we are in the planning right now. This post will be updated with more details including prices over the coming months.

Please post any feedback here and let us know which events interest you.

Hi Callum,

For road trip I would certainly be interested in Cambodia casino visit - but you sure it still open - this old brain seems to recall reading somewhere that it may have been closed to appease the Thais but may be wrong.

I will enter you for all the competitions. I guess you know that a pro is not eligible for prizes in amateur competitions so please let me know if this is a problem for you. In the RideHer you are fine as a team player and same in the Scramble. You can play for fun in the Stabelford competitions and maybe your playing partners will benefit from your advice.

All the best.

No problem Callum. I am not worried about the prizes on the golf course. I am more interested in the little 100lb. prizes later in the evening.

Callum,

You've already got me down for the RideHer Cup. Please put me down for Misty's and Babydoll's as well. Thanks.

I may be interested in the Soi Dao trip, but I'll wait for that until you post more details - if going I'll have a non-playing TG with me so I suppose I should ask her in case she doesn't want a trip away (as if :beer). I'm also not sure what a Cambodia trip would do to my visa (actually I'll have that non-visa 30-days-on-entry thing), I AM sure that I don't trust me anywhere near a casino!

Day 3 sounds like a lot of travelling for a few hours on a beach though.

I get in on the 23rd, so I'll see you for the practice day on the 30th if not before.

Only if your tee shot fails to pass the ladies' tees!

Proof of handicap is required if you are not on the PSC or Thail Golfer database.

Here are some tips including dress code for first time golfers in Thailand.

Caddies are Thailand’s secret weapon for making golf here a unique experience. They will help you with club selection, assist with the line and speed of your putts and even make you laugh off the occasional bad shot!

After your round, your caddy will drop your clubs at our transport and then you will have time for a shower and a drink before returning to Pattaya.

Your golf package includes green fee, caddy fee, buggy/share and transport. Caddy tips are extra – we recommend a minimum of 300 baht and usually more for a good caddy.

• Dress code is polo shirts with a collar and sleeves. Vests and full button shirts are not acceptable. Tailored shorts or long trousers are fine with sports socks.

• Shoes should be soft spikes or trainers

• Wear a hat and use a high SPF sun block. You will burn easily even on cloudy days.

• Drink plenty of water. There are drink stations about every 5 holes.

Thanks for that sounds like the caddies are a very helpful bunch of girls - they seem to do everything but hit the shot - how are they in the rough or in the bunkers and will they help me out if i go into the trees.

NOVEMBER GOLF FESTIVAL

We are really looking forward to welcoming everyone to Pattaya for the Solar Golf November Golf Festival. This annual festival draws golfers from throughout the world to share a unique golf and party experience in paradise. Many of the players return year after year and others are very welcome to join us for the first time. Here’s what’s happening during this 2 week festival. Many golfers have already signed up for the events. You can register for the events by sending us an email, visiting our offices at Tara Court on Pratamnuk Hill or at the registration evening on 1st November.

Here is the Pattaya Golf Festival Programme:

Friday October 30th – Burapha Golf Day

This is not a competition day – it is a warm up for the RideHer Cup. We will play 18 holes at Burapha Golf Club playing C and D courses – this year’s competition venue. Transport will collect you from your hotel between 0900 and 0915 and will return at 1700 approx. Please tell us your hotel name and room number when registering. The cost is 2,300 baht inclusive of green fee, buggy, caddy and transport.

Sunday November 1st – RideHer Cup Registration Evening

Sign up for the RideHer Cup and other golf events at the FLB on Walking Street between 8.30pm and 10.00pm. The captains will announce their teams on Wednesday evening. Please pay your entry fee of 3,700 baht on Sunday evening or in advance at the Solar Golf office. Your entry fee includes green fee, buggy, caddy fee, polo shirt, cap, prizes and a party with Italian buffet at FLB. This event is nearly full so anyone who has pre-registered should pay their entry fee on or before Sunday 1st November. Additional players can place their names on the waiting list and they will be given any places that become available as a result of cancellation or no show.

Monday November 2nd – Fun golf day! 3 clubs and a putter competition.

This year’s Festival features a new event – a 3 clubs and a putter competition. This will open to teams of two players – better ball stabelford with a full handicap allowance for each player. Maximum handicap 28 for men and 36 for women. Select 3 clubs and a putter and then take the rest of the clubs out of your bag! We will be teeing off at Phoenix at 11.17 so transport will collect you between 10.00 and 10.15. Please tell us your hotel name and room number when registering. The cost is 2,500 baht inclusive of green fee, buggy share, caddy and transport. There will be a memento for the winning team which will be presented at the golf course after the scores have been collected and checked.

Tuesday November 3rd – Ride Her Cup Captains team announcement

There will be a change of captains this year. Tom Adam (Mescalito) will captain team USA for the second year in succession. Bruce Eggleton (Hilly) is taking over as non-playing captain for the European team from Ian Duers who wants to concentrate on his golf this year. The captains will meet at 8.30 pm at FLB to pick the teams. We will allocate any of the available places to wait listed golfers before the captains draw the teams so wait listed golfers should be at FLB around 8.30 pm. The teams will be announced at 9.30 pm.

Wednesday November 4th – The 2009 RideHer Cup.

Possibly the greatest golf event in Asia, this prestigious tournament is in its 8th Year. This match play event pitches Europe's finest golfers against the cream of the USA. Mix in a few Aussies and Kiwis, blend with a Thai or three and you have a field of the world's greatest golfers! The event is delicately poised with 3 victories each to Europe and USA and 1 draw. Last year's event was a real thriller with Europe fighting for a "come from behind" draw in the last match. The bus will leave The Avenue shopping centre on Second Road at 9am prompt. Tee times are from 10.30 onwards. The bus will return to The Avenue when everyone has finished play, taken a shower and a drink.

This year’s event will take place at Burapha over C and D courses. With groups teeing off at C1 and D1.Each group will play 2 matches with a point available for each match.

Course C will be played as a Texas Scramble/Ambrose. Both players in the team hit their drives and select which drive will be used. Thereafter, the players each hit a shot from the position of the best-placed ball until the team has holed out. The second ball should be placed within one scorecard length of the selected ball and surfaces cannot be changed. The handicap allowance will be 1/4 the combined handicap of the 2 players in the team. Strokes will be according to the stroke index of the hole. So, a team comprising an 18 and a 28 handicapper will receive 11.5 (12) strokes and a team with a 14 and an 18 will receive 8 strokes. In this case, the first team will receive 4 strokes for 18 holes and this will be reduced to 2 strokes for course C to be taken on the 2 holes with the lowest stroke index on course C. To add a bit of spice, the team will be required to select a minimum of 3 drives for each partner on the 9 holes. The holes will be played as straight match play and the match will be determined as a win (1 point) or a half (1/2 point) for the 9 holes.

Course D will be played as four ball better ball. Each player in the team plays every shot at the hole and the best net score for the hole wins that hole. The handicaps for the four balls will be full handicap allowance stroking off the lowest handicap player. So, in the above example, the 14 handicapper will play off scratch, his partner will get 4 strokes and the players in the other team will get 4 and 14 strokes respectively for 18 holes. The number of strokes received will then be halved for the 9 holes that are being played. Strokes will be allowed according to the SI off the holes on course D. The four balls will also be match play with the lowest net winning the hole and the match determined as a win or a half.

There will be prizes for winning 2 balls as well as long dive and near pin.

The RideHer Cup presentation party will take place at 8.30 pm in the FLB Bar on 4th November. There will be a hot food buffet on offer and then we will have the presentation around 9.30 pm.

Friday November 6th – Misty’s Open at Eastern Star.

The Misty’s Open is an individual stabelford event. Transport will leave The Avenue shopping centre on Second Road at 9.00 am prompt. Players will tee off as 4 balls from 10.30. Transport will return to the Avenue at 1830 approx. Entry fee is 2,900 baht per player – payable either at FLB on Sunday or at the Solar Golf Offices in advance. Your entry fee includes green fee, buggy share, caddy fee, transport, polo shirt and the party with food.

The party will start at Club Misty’s a Go-go on Soi 15 at 8.30 pm with a buffet followed by the announcement of the winners and prize giving. There will be a winner’s trophy plus long drive and near pin. This will be a private party on the upper level of Misty’s. Should be lots of fun!

Sunday November 8th to Tuesday November 10th – Trip to Soi Dao Highlands

Our road trip this year will be to Soi Dao Highlands – a golf resort in near to the Cambodian border. This is a real gem of a golf course in hillside terrain. The resort is 3 star standard with clean and comfortable rooms. There is not much to do at night so this is very much a golfers’ break! If there are non-playing companions we can arrange an excursion on the Monday. We will depart Pattaya on Sunday morning at 9.00 am and return on Tuesday 10th at around 6.00 pm. Our package includes transport, accommodation, breakfast and 3 rounds of golf including caddy fees. Carts, if required, are extra. The prices for these packages are:

• Golfer sharing twin room 7,100 baht

• Golfer in single room 8,700 baht

• Non golfer sharing room 3,900 baht
