Try Spybot Search and Destroy... not sure which virus you have, but it finds most of them, and is free.

Get it here:

I use (and pay for) Norton anti-virus. (It's not bad value as I use it on 3 computers.) Is using Spybot going to give me anything that I don't already get from Norton, please?

Yes, actually.

Norton is one of the heaviest AV systems on the market. By heavy I mean it uses a much larger portion of your systems resources to do what it does, and its updates are not very timely. They have gotten better over the last few years, but still not great.

On top of that, Norton does not detect or remove most Adware or tracking cookies - thats just not what it was designed to do. It hunts VIRUSES... not adware/spyware/cookies.

I guess I should have been clearer earlier... You do not just want a AV system... you do want one, but you also want a spyware removal tool of some kind. In my experience Spybot S&D is the best of the spyware removers out there by a large margin, but there are other options.

Each "brand" has advantages and disadvantages when it comes to AV... Norton is at the bottom of the list IMHO. It does way too much to slow down a users system for me to recommend it.

There will be some that will disagree, however, that was my experience with Norton. Used it twice, once was enough, however a computer geek that I trusted talked me into trying the newest Norton claiming it was the best and didn't use up so much of my system resources as before. It slowed my computer to a crawl, I removed it within two weeks.

I almost never make hard recommendations, just give some choices - but I actively and strongly urge regular (non-corporate) users NOT to use Norton or Symantec. I kind of like frosty's word "heavy" but by whatever word they are pigs. I've seen hundreds of viruses I'd rather have than these anti-virus dogs.

Just like to echo frosty that a serious PC/device user needs anti-virus (AVG as an example, although I think it's getting too big too), needs anti-malware/adware (Spyboy as an example). I use the free, "light" Microsoft Essentials for anti-virus and general checking, it's my first/main defence and the only thing that runs 24 hours. I have Avast as my anti-virus scanner/backup and Malwarebytes as the anti-adware backup. A check for rootkits once in a while is a really good idea, too. Sysinternal makes RootkitRevealer which I think is a good choice for starters.

I still disagree with frosty about "free" sites, of which I use dozens and dozens, but that's life. A major part of security is having confidence in your system. Frosty is confident, so am I. I disagree that there is *one* system or a system that is "better" than another automatically.

Thanks for the responses to the above.

Re the comments made about Norton, I have not found slow-running much of an issue.

You know, you should talk to Bush-Pig. You 2 have a lot in common. Maybe the 2 of you can move to Kentucky and have babies or something.

Now, now, Forrest. You may be a microsoft software savant, but repartee is way, Way, WAY beyond your grasp.

Avast is likely the best FREE AV/AM software out there, but if you do a lot of hard core surfing, I recommend BitDefender. Of the paid AV/IS systems out there, I have found it to be the best mix between resource usage and ability to detect/fix new issues quickly. And at $39/year for 3 computers its not too expensive.

I recommend BitDefender.

BitDefende is a real pain to remove

youll find it hard to clean up the remnants and it will not do a clean uninstall

you have to use a specialist removal tool
