I will be going to Thailand towards the end of Dec. and staying for 12 days.  I'll be staying in Bangkok for two days then on to Pattaya.

I am wondering if I should spend the rest of my time in Pattaya or go back to Bangkok for a few days.

I am not too interested in your typical tourist sites and plan to spend most of my vacation drinking and ..... you know!

Being peak season and all, will Pattaya be too crowded with touists competing over the "resources"?

Comments from the experts will be greatly appreciated!

Hank

Im no expert, but if your only in thailand for the beer and the girls then pattaya is your best bet.Despite its reputation bangkok is quite limited when it comes to socialising(others may disagree).two weeks in nana plaza would try anyones patience and soi cowboy is smaller then you would think(a much higher chance of running into that bg you want to avoid!)pattaya has a lot more options all round which you can read about elsewhere on this forum.enjoy yourself wherever you end up!!

Ive always found that a few days in Bangkok at the beginning of a trip then a few days at the end works fine.

The few days at the end can be used for seeing the things you didnt see on the first trip. Whilst I like Pattaya it drives me up the wall after a week or so.

while I will probably get a lot of  disagreements and  head-shakers since this IS a pattaya board,  my opinion is that Bangkok is better for everything.  To me Pattaya is the minor leagues compared to the big-time of the capitol, and there is just so much more to do and see in bangkok, even if you are not a daytime sight-seer.  the nighlife in the greatest city in the world is fantastic and the place is always pulsating with excitement [and this was so much better 3 or 4  years ago before Thaksin and his thugs  got put in office; Pattaya also].  I also firmly believe that the girls in BKK are hotter and better-looking, more fashionable and sophisticated, and not so  country-ish as the Issan  girls who end up in Pattaya.

With that said, Pattaya is great place!  Every person has to see that crazy city  and it is indeed the 2nd [or maybe tied with Phuket for 2nd] best place in Thailand,  IMO.  So many girls that you are bound to find a few you like, and plenty of 'activities'  to keep you busy day and night.  It's also much cheaper for everything, from rooms to the girls'  prices to food and other things.  don't bother with the  beach; if you want to go for a swim  go to Jomtien beach.  Pattaya is a  fun place and  there's  no question you will have a good time there, but to me Bangkok is  just miles ahead.

why not a week in both?  that's the typical advice I give to first-timers to the Kingdom who only have 2 weeks to spend.  You could take 2 or 3 days in BKK right off and then spend 3 or 4 there before you leave.  I am sure  you will not be dissapointed.

 good luck  Bob

At a 90 Baht bus ride I don't think you need to decide between the two.  Get bored?  Go to the other places for a day or two.

I've kept rooms in both places so that I can hop back and forth as I please.

It's easy to get hot girls in both places so for me it boils down to who I've met and want to hang out with, what parties are going on etc.

Explore around, meet new people and don't feel you need to pick one place or another!

My previous trips to Thailand have all been short ones but I still spent the first and last day or so in Bangkok. The next trip in November will be for 23 days! ;D ;D ;D I'm spending the first 2 days and the last 6 days in Bangkok ;D as I feel that I still have a lot to learn about what to do in Bangkok. :(

If this is your first trip, then I suggest that you spend the first two days in Bangkok to see whether you like it or not. Both have lots to offer but what suits one person may not suit the other. ::) Everyone has their own opinion but the only way to know for sure is to find out for yourself.

"and soi cowboy is smaller then you would think"

The Pattaya jungle drums work awfully well too.  My last trip in September I spent 8-9 days with Tigerlady and after I ditched her she kept very good track of me.  I ran into her the day I left and she knew who I was with & what days, so if you want to stay out of sight it's best to keep a very low profile.  I'm not one to slink around and it seems the veterans have amazing communication networks.

Hank,

I wish you luck on your first trip and try to remember that plans tend to go out the window 24 hrs after landing in LOS!  Just smile, enjoy and keep your wits about you...you'll have the time of your life!

   Wishing I was there now!  :'( :'( :'(

BKKBOB gets this one right-BKK is IMHO better than Pattaya.  I always take a couple of days in BKK, then move on to Pattaya, and end up in BKK for a few days before returning to the states.  Pattaya is nice, but for the shopping you can't beat Bangkok and there are always things to go and see during the day.  Just my 2 baht worth.  Jimmy

IMO 3 days in Bangkok is plenty. I enjoy all my time in Pattaya. Pattaya is more laid back and cheaper. I always spend my last few days in Bangkok.

Your going to love both places!

IMHO I think you should try 1-3 nights in BKK then go to PTY and then decide if you want to go back to BKK before going home, you can divide the nights up in BKK, spending 1 night at Nana, 1 night in Patpong and 1 in Soi Cowboy and do something different on the return if you want leaving 6-9 in PTY.

Bkboiler on my last trip I and my 2 mates also thought that going to BKK for 1-2 nights before departure (so as not to miss our flight) would be wise but this was not to be and we still don't know how it happened even so the extra three day's were great but it did cost us dearly as the plastic took an extra heavy beating and my boss was not amused.  [smiley=teeth.gif] [smiley=teeth.gif] [smiley=teeth.gif] [smiley=teeth.gif] [smiley=teeth.gif] [smiley=teeth.gif] [smiley=teeth.gif] [smiley=teeth.gif] [smiley=teeth.gif]

Same thing, I'm going to be in Thailand for 8 nights total, definitely want some time in both cities. Only I've read that hotels can actually fill up in the middle of December and that I should book everything in advance. Is that wrong? Thanks

You should definately get booked up now if you know where you want to go. In fact, you have already left it too late to have a full choice available.

If going for 8 days, then I suggest staying in Bangkok at the beginning for say 3 days and then heading off for Pattaya. Either way, you should get your skates on and secure some accommodation as the choice will continue to dry up as time progresses.

Hank a lot depends on your budget. BKK costs more.

Have no fear of the 'resources' drying up. Just imagine an atom that keeps on dividing and dividing, and dividing...

As others said earlier, have 1-3 days in BKK first then head down to Pattaya and decide form there.

If you get bored with the bars and 'research', the advantage Pattaya has over BKK is easy access to golf courses, fishing, diving etc.

I split my time 50/50 on my first trip, and if I had to do it again, I'd do the same... but having made three trips so far, I'd say that Pattaya beats Bangkok hands down.  The girls' attitudes are better in Pattaya, the prices are lower, and the whole atmostphere is more relaxing.

Having just returned and added up my costs, I realized it actually cost me more while I was in Pattaya than while in BKK. Basically it came down to 1 reason. For me, in BKK, there was enough non-TG things to keep me busy from 10 am to 6 pm. I never saw the inside of a bar in BKK until 7 pm, while in Pattaya, I ran out of things to do, and found myself in the bars at noon, ST at 3 PM and a LT later in evening. If I was the type of guy who slept all day Pattaya would be cheaper, but I am not, so I spent about 25% more per day than while in BKK.

*lol*

I spend more in Pattaya too, but it's from Scuba diving during the day... a day diving costs about as much as a soapie visit or a little more than a beer bar long time.
