It is a good point...... the PCX is popular with thieves now and rather an expensive model to have to replace.

Since renters arrive without an insurance pedigree nor that much understanding of the insurance market nor type of coverage in Thailand, perhaps you'd say just how they make this extra coverage and with whom?

 

For example do you sell extra cover that eliminates risk of damage like Avis or Hertz do?

 

Is any coverage valid if people lack a motorcycle or scooter licence (there are both in some countries) at all and just have a car licence?

 

Do the renters need an international drivers licence?

 

I have to think people are renting these things with no insurance in effect at all due to not having a permit to drive them, and are also at risk for damages.

People are renting with the government mandated insurance....effectively limited 3rd party cover.

 

Most people in Thailand are riding about with that, or less.

 

Generally renters liability is defined in a contract they sign, in both Thai and English.

 

Your other questions might be specific to any supplementary insurance companie's policy, should you be able to find one. I knew one rental company that did offer supplementary insurance. Even then, covering for theft, in Pattaya, is hard to find. I have a policy, I was persuaded it was a good idea as the obligatory insurance would not cover the bond required to keep me out of jail...I was told, as usual, farangs have to pay more.

 

If a person does not have a motorcycle licence perhaps he should not be renting a bike...nevertheless you have to accept that in Thailand not all rules are obeyed, and some personal risk/responsibility is required.... it is far from a nanny state.
