Very nice photos. Brings back a few memories of when I was in Amsterdam last which was about 12 to 15 years ago.

The poster who made reference to the girls who sell their butts was I am sure talking about the famous "Red Light District". For his information you are not allowed to take any photos of the ladies in that district. This is strictly enforced and you will lose your camera if caught. At least thats how it was when I was there and probably has not changed.

When I was in Amsterdam I was staying in the Renaissance Hotel which is an excellent hotel I decided to go to the casino in Amsterdam and inquired at the front desk as how to get there. The gentleman behind the desk instructed me to go out of the front door and go to the streetcar island which was in the middle of the street and wait for a certain numbered streetcar which would take me to within about a block of the casino.

I thanked him and waited on the island with a number of other folks for the streetcar which came within 10 minutes. I got on the streetcar along with several other folks who also waited on the island. I sat down in a seat as they did thinking someone would come in my car to sell me a ticket. No one ever came in and I noticed people who got on at the same stop as I did were starting to get off at various stops without paying so I assumed the streetcars must be free. I got off at my stop and went to the casino. When I left the casino I returned to the hotel on another streetcar and again no one asked for any money.

I used the streetcars several more times when I was in Amsterdam. When I was checking out of the hotel the gentleman behind the desk asked me what I thought of Amsterdam. I told him I liked it a lot and thought the free streetcar were a very nice touch. He replied "what do you mean by free streetcars?" I told him about getting on and no one came to collect fares and I observed others get on and off with no payment so I figured they were free. He laughed and told me the other persons probably had weekly or monthly passes and I should have gone to a machine between the two cars and bought a ticket. Said it was a good thing that a transit inspector had not come on and requested my ticket. Guess I was lucky on that one.

A similar thing happened to me and my mates between christmas and the new year in disseldorf,we had free passes to use the buses, trams, and trains, but only once were we asked to show them and that was on a bus journey, nobody on the trams or trains checked at all and we didnt need to put them through a machine or anything. In effect people could if they wanted to risk it, travel without paying quite easy,

Hi,

Nice photos. I used to live on the 9 tram route and it seems like an antique one that you photographed. Nice to see the Old Sailor still going strong. Nice to have a beer there and watch the action close by.

Looks damp and cold to me. I will wait untill its August before I go back there.

It was. Every time I go there, the weather always seems to be shitty. Just my bad luck I suppose.

for me its queens day.. thats the dutch queens birthday.. its in summer and its mental.. on that day its legal for anyone to sell anything on the streets.. so you get people doing mobile tequela shots walking round with a hat full of spliffs for sale.. all sorts..

plus a lot of the bars will string a few barges together on the canal and make a dance floor and pump out the tunes..it really is a great day, the dutch love there queen.. she lives in leiden or did, when i was there youd see her now and then riding her bicycal around town.. very down to earth.. no chaufer driven rollers for her..

Ah the Dam,used to be a very nice cheap place before the introduction of the Euro. I used to live in Holland for a few years. Leiden,Delft,Gouda,Purmerend and Hoopdorf. Had many a good time there. Was great when they had the Guilder and the girls charged 50 guilder which came out at about £18 if my memory serves me well. Now they charge 50 Euros which comes out at about £50,well it did until the Euro crashed a bit. You used to be able to go buy a big bag of skunk for 25 Guilder and a crate of beer was a fiver and you got money back when you took the bottles back.

The TV had BBC 1&2 on it and the British newspapers were available every morning. Most of the Dutch spoke English and were very friendly including a few Dutch girl friends I had.
