Considering the language you speak, you were probably a citizen of a nation in the same Alliance with the US that stood against the Warsaw Pact. So did you hate the Russian's during the cold war? Guess what. Neither did Americans, but we opposed Soviet policies, expansion, etc.

No ,I didn't hate the russians, saw the James Bond movie in the 60's "To Russia with Love"I didn'y even hate the VC that where trying to kill me in 1968 in Vietnam but I did learn to hate American politicians and I'am an American.

Yet more slanted news coverage.

It was just a standard fire drill at one of the big hotels, no need to blow shit out of proportion

Nor does what most people think make something a fact. Most USians don't even realise they are part of a bigger continent.

America is a big place. Which country in America are you from?

It's the same in the UK. Everyone I know hates our politicians on account of their lies, deceit, greed and the two futile wars they have sent our young men off to die and get maimed for life in.

In the World Wars of the last century it was considered a politician's duty to ensure that their sons served in the armed forces and many of them were prominent in the casualty lists especially in the Great War. Due to their privileged position in society they were automatically made officers, usually junior ones who served in front line infantry regiments and those young men suffered an appallingly high rate of casualties.

It will be a cold snowy day in Pattaya before you see a British politician's son listed among the casualties in Afghanistan. How times have changed in 100 years and with it the public's opinion of those who more or less control our lives

Much the same in the US with a few notable exceptions such as John McCain's sons. I may have missed it, but I don't know of any of this generation of Bushes or Kennedys (and there are a lot of them) who have served in the military. I know the monarchy no longer has a political role in the UK, but that is one of the reasons I respect Prince Harry. He went to the rock pile not once but twice. While the government is probably not going to authorize a combat deployment for William, flying rescue helicopters is not exactly risk free.

interesting point my grandfather told me of one such chap lord somebody i cant remember the name. but he told me he was the bravest man he had ever met .walking around with bullets whizzing by leading by example. he went right through the war like that and was killed on the last day of the war during the final assault of Berlin by a Hitler youth . they caught him and there was a fight amongst the men on whether to kill him or not.half wanted to the rest said he was only fourteen and didn't know what he had done.

I agree but you tend to get a blank look during the "interview" if you say United States.

Never heard anyone call Brazil or Argentina "America", have you. I am pretty sure the U.S. is not on the same continent as Brazil and Argentina as well, but then maybe I need to go back to school.

Well I've certainly heard of and used the term "Part of the Americas" when talking about Brazil, Argentina or any other country forming part of the "New World".

Yes, I have, by people of those American countries!

The Americas was a term I grew up with... and no I wasn't born before the canal was finished.

The Americas, or America,[2][3][4] are lands in the Western Hemisphere that are also known as the New World. Comprising the continents of North America and South America ....... it isn't my fault the whole country doesn't know it's name.

Hadn't heard they seceded, so yeah, let's exclude them from "all the rest".

BTW, had a Brazilian neighbor here in CA. He said he loved living here in America. :D

People use both, as do I.

Fact is, that if you mention America or American ("American" being the basis for this discussion) most people won't think you're talking about the countries or the peoples of Brasil or Argentina or any other country in the Americas. It is what it is.........

Wrong..... it would likely depend on who I was talking to.

It was particularly erroneous in South America when I worked there.

In fact it was a friend's Argentinian wife who got me out of that habit after chastising me.

It is silly really isn't it, like a Thai saying they come from the country of Asia.

Not wrong and obviously why I said most. And you can call it as silly as it pleases you, doesn't change anything.

If you ask someone in the UK........Or Australia, or New Zealand...........Or Russia,France,Italy blah blah where do Americans come from? They'll likely say America or the US........In both cases they mean, The US.

Here's a 'Geograffy' lesson. It isn't completetly....... un-biased. Worth watiching.

I agree but the original poster who was called on his terminology referred only to "America" not "Part of the Americas" as you can see:

America is a big place. Which country in America are you from?

The Americas was a term I grew up with... and no I wasn't born before the canal was finished.

Again the original poster used the singular version of America not the plural version. I have never heard anyone before this thread use the singular version of America to refer to anything besides the U.S.A. I have also spent a significant amount of time in South America (Argentina, Uruguay, and Chile) and yes Americas is sometimes used to refer to South American countries in general. But never heard America used to refer to a South American country.

Are you on one of those silly 'Smart' phones that doesn't display smileys!

I wish I had kept notes when I went to the USA but I was asked some really dumb questions like... 'Is it winter over there in England as well as here?'

If you do not know about North and South America a refresher would probably help.
