Good Movies / TV Shows

For those who are fans of Netflix's "Vikings"...

for something far, far better (and realistic), I highly recommend "Norsemen"

I watched the first episode and it is a comedy. Your recommendation was followed based on your charachterization of it being realistic.

What is realistic about the opening scene where the captain punches a complaining slave and then asks his fellow Viking if he went too far and discusses a kindler, gentler leadership style?

Lighten up. I punked you. Norsemen is a Vikings satire - and is funny (don't miss the obligatory Bad Guy who's over-the-top kinky).

I burned out on "Vikings". Have you noticed how nearly every episode includes a vicarious torture and sex scene? Just another variation of "Sons of Anarchy", which is another male soap opera show.

If you are going to make a recommendation please be accurate in your description. This is not a punked you topic. Yours is likely the first misleading post to date on this topic.

I gave up on Vikings after less than one season. I was looking forward to a period drama in the same genre.

I'm also watching Mr. Mercedes. Impressive acting but the storyline, uhm...judge for yourself

Watching Brendan Glesson pissing in the morning isn't what the doctor ordered...

You don't have to be British to enjoy this.......But it helps and it also helps if you can remember 1982..So being of a certain age.

A fascinating insight to just how, 'Heath Robinson', make-do and un-prepared we were.......But importantly also of how determined, once set on a course, the British were too.

We went to "Bad times at El Royale" last night. Quite enjoyed it. Doesn't really fit into a particular category could be a thriller, or film noir, or action, but best described as drama. I thought the actors all did a great job, especially Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo, who I'd never heard of.

I never look at reviews before I go to a movie, prefer to experience them with an open mind. When I read the reviews they either loved it or hated it.

So if anyone else watches it, I'd love to hear their view.

I have beccome a fan of BBC detective shows. The last two nights I have started watching the first season of Luther.

There is an excellent twist to this as Ruth Wilson, who plays Alice, is the Moriarity to Idris Elba's Holmes. Elba plays the part of Luther.

Good link. I've read the book as well, it goes into detail about how it was done and the logistics involved were mind boggling!.

Interestingly, when the idea was mooted, they were looking for a refuelling rig for the Vulcan, but they couldn't find the one they knew existed for love or money, until someone noticed that it was being used as an ashtray in an RAF Officers mess...

Yes that's a crucial 'part' that got my attention.......Almost divine intervention.

I remember at the time being impressed by the distances involved and the number of required refuelings. It wasn't until many years later I read that the Vulcan force had been out of the air to air refueling business for some time.

To redeem my soiled rep, I'll recommend 3 films from Netflix.

1) Below Her Mouth: A laughable predictable plot BUT really good erotic lesbian sex. This is little more than soft-core porn that somehow got general theater distribution.

2) Carol: a 2015 romantic drama starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara ("Girl with the Dragon Tattoo"). The movie is unusual in that there are two equal lead roles. It works. In fact, it works so well that the story is less a lesbian love story than just a love story between two people. I know, this sounds like a chick flick. It is. But it's outstanding. Great musical score also.

3) The Kindergarten Teacher. A nuanced (read: chick flick) movie that uses the vehicle of poetry as a story element. But the theme is about missing out on your life expectations by settling for less.

Your rep is not soiled. Not with me anyway.

I have been curious about the first two especially and will add them all to my queue.

Thanks!

The missus and I are now midway through the last season of Breaking Bad so we'll finish it soon. Apparently the Better Call Saul spin off series which is a prequel to Breaking Bad is supposed to be very good. I also like the character of Saul Goodman played by Bob Odenkirk so I think I may well enjoy it. Has anyone seen it and is it as good as its ratings suggest?

It is good, but far from 'Breaking Bad'....

It deals with the time prior to BB, but never seems to go anywhere, and feels like 3 or so concurrent, loosely related plots.

Slightly quirky, but watchable.

I might not bother then. A show has to be exceptionally good for me to watch it because I don't want to invest the time involved unnecessarily. The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Six Feet Under and Rome are the only shows I've ever watched in their entirety. I'm not really a fan of TV. We don't even have any channels in our place. A lot of people I've spoke to in the past have raved about Game of Thrones. Is that as good as people say? Edited by Siam Sam

Those are, indeed, high standards. All I can say is that I liked Better Call Saul very much.

A few more Netflix recommendations:

The Wire - A police procedural

Nurse Jackie - Stars Edie Falco ("Carmela Soprano") and is about the high price of drug addiction: not just your life but also the complete betrayal of trust to everyone near and dear

Episodes - comedy. Might not be for everyone

Orange is the New Black - Women's prison dramedy (with MA-rated lesbian sex)
