are eyeglass prescription numbers universal?

Even if not, an eye test to get a new prescription there shouldn't be too expensive.

"The optician prescription might seem a bit complicated, but it's actually quite simple! Eyeglass prescriptions may differ in format depending on your optician and country. Though, an eyeglass prescritopn is more or less universal, as opticians worldwide use the same procedures when writing a prescription. Below you will find an example of a common standard prescription. The prescription is divided into right (OD) and left (OS) eye. The next line indicates the various prescription terms.

A friend lost his glasses in Kanchanaburi, but had his prescription from Australia with him. A new pair of specs cost a great deal more than in Australia and I was shocked to see the price. That was about 5 years ago and cost him around 34000 THB.  Of course, he went into Top Charoen to order them, due to staff with short skirts and nice legs.  Stay away from them if you want a good price; there are plenty of other optometrists to choose from that provide just as good service, but without all the expense.
