Am I a Digital Nomad?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm moving to Pattaya soon on a Non O retirement visa. I "dabble" two or three times a week buying and selling shares on the NYSE using a trading platform on my laptop, does this mean I'm running an online business and should I be looking to apply for a DTV instead?

Stay below the radar, use a VPN and don't advertise your service if you provide one. You'll be fine on a retirement visa.

That's what I did when I first moved here. Now fully retired, but the first half dozen years here I did data warehouse work for my old company back in the US. It was sweet deal, charging western consulting rates while living in a country where the cost of living was a fraction of the west; not to mention much better looking eye candy.

Totally agree with  @Bushcraft and @forcebwithu .I worked here for many years just on the entry stamp.. but those were the days before forums and YT Vloggers. A glorious time when everybody minded their own business.

Unfortunately we are in a time of envy amongst expats and locals alike. Do your thing but don't tell anybody anything.

I don't know if this is relevant but, in the UK, buying and selling shares is not regarded as a business.

Same same for New Zealand but we still get taxed on dividends and share reinvestment plans. I have no option than to contribute to the government.

Indeed. And quite likely will pay Capital Gains Tax, or equivalent, on any gains made in trading the shares. But CGT, not Income Tax.

I only know one guy who got a W.P. for trading, but he was employed by a big bank in BKK.

Is there not a place to look up what the requirements are for Digital Nomad?

I doubt gambling online is one of those qualifications.

I think that in a small country the cost of setting up and administration of such a tax would cost more than would be collected.
