12 August is Thai Mother's Day

12 August is the current Queen of Thailand's birthday (Queen Sirikit, born 1932). It is a National Holiday and this day also serves as Thai Mothers Day (Wan Mae Hang Chart), because the Queen of Thailand is regarded as the mother of all Thai people.

 

It is traditional to give your Mother and other women much older than you that want to show respect (Grandmother, Aunt, etc) gifts on this day - usually Phuang Malai (fragrant Thai Jasmine Flower Garlands) and/or White Flowers. If you prefer, you can give her Other Gifts she will like.

 

You can perhaps impress your girlfriend/wife and her mother by telling her you know this - and organizing a gift

 

NOTE: Do not give your Thai girlfriend or wife a Phuang Malai on Thai Mothers Day from yourself. This is because Phuang Malai are expected to be given to Thai ladies only by people much older than they are. If you give one to your Thai girlfriend or wife, she may feel like she is very old - and she will not be happy !!
