I've had the same as #1. You see the name of the network on the display of the phone. But calls made from the phone do not result in a connection. I too had to buy a local phone to make it work. This symptom does not seem network-related. I tried the phone with a different network in my home country and all calls went ok. Only in Thailand did I receive this strange behaviour.
