Hanoi street life. This is what its all about in the evenings. Sat on the street with a beer and some food, and just watching the world go by. I could happily do this every single night i'm there. You can get 4 beers for 20,000VND on the street. That is only 60 pence , or for our American brothers, that's only $1 USD, it is that cheap!! And then the Police turn up, and every thing changes. All the little stools and tables disappear as there are actually on the street. Seems whatever the agreement is, they cant have their stools on the actual street. Then the pol

Today was my last full day in Hanoi before i left for Dien Bien Phu, so i decided to take a full days walk around this great city. Started walking through the Old Quarter, to the Citadel, then to Uncle Ho's Mausoleum, the One Pillar Pagoda, through the Government buildings and Presidential Palace, through and around the West lake taking in Tran Quoc Pagoda, stopping for (a late lunch at 3pm) on the "island" of Tran Bach before walking back through the Old Quarter, to the lake and then back to the hotel. I covered a fair few miles today, but it was a great walk, and a walk to be done again th

All these photos were taken in the Hanoi OLd Quarter and around Hoan Kiem lake. Hanoi has to be one of the most friendliest cities in Asia, if not the world. Once you get away from all the motorbikes and crazy driving skills which are a lot worse than their Thai brothers, it really is a great city. Food is amazing here, i find it better than Thai food and the portion sizes that i came across in restaurants were huge. Definite value for money here. Its good to see that they try, and do enforce, a no bike rule on some streets after a certain time..................................

fantastic place to visit, and if anyone here does head off to Hanoi, i highly recomend that you add this place to your visit. The central old citadel of Hanoi was the former residence of Vietnamese monarchs dating back to Đại Việt, when the city was known as Thăng Long. The Imperial Citadel of Thang Long was constructed earliest by the Ly dynasty in 1010 and remained the seat of the Vietnamese court until 1810, when Huế became the capital city. The royal palaces and other various structures were largely destroyed by the colonial French in the late 19th century. Some structures remain su

Vietnamese Air Force/Air Defence Museum, Hanoi.
firth1974 posted a topic in Pictorial Travel Reports
Military history buff time again.(For those that like war related things). I paid a visit to the Vietnamese Air Force/Air Defence museum in Hanoi. Stroke of luck finding this place really, as i came across it whilst reading some reviews of other places in Hanoi on Tripadvisor. That website is fantastic for research. The museum is located on the old disused Bach Mai airfield, and located towrds the south end of Hanoi. You would think even having a map (written in vietnamese) and the address written in vietnamese script, that a taxi should have no problems finding this place. Wrong! Apparen -

Vietnamese weddings. They seemed to be all the rage when i was there a couple of weeks ago. All these young Viet couples having their pre/post wedding photos done. Must be an asian craze thing! Even an American couple were getting in on the wedding act as well....................

Hoa Lo Prison/Maison Centrale, was effectionally known as the "The Hanoi Hilton" by the flyers and aircrew that were unlucky enough to be shot down over North Vietnam. Its a fantastic little place to visit, and should be high on your list of places to visit. But, as i found in quite a few places around Vietnam, it has some of the best propaganda to be found anywhere in the world. Well worth the entrance fee and an hour or so of your time. the site first seen as the downed pilots entered the "Hilton" back in the 60/70's..... The original front gate doors.......

Huu Tiep Lake,The iconic B52 lake, where the wreckage of a B52 now lay. There is not really too much to see here, but according to my guide/moto driver/stalker/know-it-all, back in the 70's, this lake was a damn sight lot bigger than it is now, and the main body of this '52, is actually under some of the houses to the right of the wreckage. If true or not, who knows, but i had no reason not to believe him. This lake was one of the places that was on my list of places to visit, and in a way, im glad i made it here to see this.

Hanoi. The one thing that surprised me was that there were so many trees everywhere. Every road you went down had trees, and it makes for a nice site, when you compare it to LoS.

I love a good bit of military history, so this museum was one of the many that i wanted to visit. The B52 museum is located on Doi Can, in the Ba Dinh district of Hanoi. A very cheap taxi ride from basically any hotel you might think about staying in. As seems to be the case all over Vietnam, museums are closed on Fridays and Mondays, and never quite seem to open on time on any other days either, so its always hit and miss if its open. On this visit, it was a friday, so i couldnt get inside the museum, but they didnt mind me wandering around their grounds taking photos. This place is bac
