Let's wait and see - december is not far away...

Pattaya swaps old ‘two rows’ for minibuses

PATTAYA, Oct 6 (TNA) - Pattaya is to do away with its traditional 'song thaew' buses and switch to modern minibuses in a move designed to ensure a faster flow of traffic through this tourist resort in Thailand's eastern province of Chonburi.

Tourists who once had to endure cramped conditions in the 'song thaew' buses--named so because of their two rows of seating--will, from now on, be treated to more spacious vehicles, thanks to an initiative by Pattaya Mayor Narin Wattanasatsathorn.

Yesterday Mr. Narin said that a private sector company had already submitted its plans to replace the traditional vehicles with 16 air-conditioned 30-seater minibuses, six open-air minibuses and two buses specially designed for the disabled.

The new vehicles, said to be luxuriously decked out, will cost Bt30 for a single trip.

Also available will be daily travelcards for Bt90, three-day travelcards for Bt180, and monthly travelcards for Bt900.

Mr. Narin said that he expected the new service to commence at the end of December.

As I understood these news these busses are planned to driver other routes than the usual Baht Bas route.

Also, they will have a total of 22 or 24 buses, to cover 3 long routes, all the way from Naklua to Na Jomtien, including Tepprasit Road and some strtches East of Sukhumvit.

This probably will mean that the buses go every 20 or 15 Minutes. I guess a lot of people will stick to 10 (or 5) Bt, and immediate service.

Of course the new routes might be of interest to some people.

But I think 30 Bt is way to high!

cybers1b,

Sorry, but I also posted the same story in the 'members section'. Didn't notice you had already posted. At least here the non-members will be able to see it.

I like the traditional baht buses and want them to stay in service... :nod

Let's see how this turns out.

It could happen, as a consequence, that the overall public transport situation in Pattaya indeed improves, as compared to the status quo. B)
