We all know how useful the Nationwide, Flexi Account Debit card, is in Thailand.

I have three VALID NATIONWIDE, Flexi - current account debit cards.

Simply open one up in your name - then a joint account with your Dad or relative.

On the joint account - both of you will be issued with ADDITIONAL debit cards.

Tell your relative why you are doing this and just deposit £1 to open the account.

You now have two Nationwide Debit cards and THREE, if your relative trusts you with his card as well!

Tip Number Two.

Keep the BULK of your cash, in a Nationwide linked - e-savings account and transfer when needed, every few days.

Tip 3.

Have an agreed ovedraft facility set up, just incase you forget to transfer cash, from e-savings account, to Flexi account and you run out of money, late in the evening.

It's perfectly possible to have more than three Nationwide, Flexi account, debit cards. Just repeat the process described in tip one!

You can open up as many flexaccounts as you want to in your name doesnt have to be a joint account. I have 2 one is a visa debit card account the other is just a basic cashpoint card account which is safer in case it gets lost. When you open the account say you only want the cashpoint card and not the visa debit card. I then take both with me to thailand as a back up.

Thanks, did not realise that!

Good idea concerning the basic Cashpoint card. So it can't be used to purchase goods in shops or order items over internet!

Will the basic card still work in LOS ATM's, without the Visa function?

Do NATIONWIDE send out replacement cards (current account or credit card) if one's card is lost, stolen or needs to be cancelled??

What type of delivery do they use??

Thanks

I asked about this in my local branch just before I moved out here last year and was told that Thailand was one of the countries they wouldn't post cards to. They might be willing to have a duplicate card couriered out to you though no doubt at your exzpense!

Thanks, but what's the difference between a duplicate card and a new card? Surely the security issue remains either way?

edit: Oh you mean they will issue a new debit card BUT the customer must pay the courier charges??

I'll venture into this UK thread with a few US relevant comments that may apply.

Linkage: There is a risk of linking what we call ATM debit cards to other accounts you may have. Yes, you want some kind of overdraft protection, but you also don't want to have a hacker be able to steal more than just some limited quantity in the first account.

A Form of Protection: A way US banks limit that danger from ATMs is to provide a limit to you, on your request, of X number of dollars per day that can be withdrawn. For me I've specified $350. (That's on my ATM (debit) card, not a credit card limit.) This shields a linked account from theft thru your ATM card -- but you'll need other protection from someone trying wire transfers.

All good advice.

I'm starting to venture along the lines of, taking my debit card/s, but using Travelers cheques, until they run out, then using my ATM cards if I need to.

As regards travelers cheques:

1. If they are stolen, can they be cashed by the thief, as I thought one needed a passport to cash the cheques?

2. If they are stolen, how do I get replacement ones and how quickly can I get them?

Nationwide automatically apply a £300 maximum per day limit, used to be £500 but they lowered it last month.

I'm pretty certain that Nationwide lowered the daily withdrawal limit to £300 some time ago - though I could well be wrong.
