Anyone know how to get from Penn Station in New York to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR)? I know I can take the LIRR to Jamaica Station where I can then take the Airtran to JFK Terminal 4 (Thai), but I have never been to Penn Station before and I've heard it's like an underground city.

So, does anyone know how to get from Penn Station to the LIRR? :D Thanks.

Tengotodo are you in New York? I am in New York as well. If you are trying to get to the airport you best bet is to go to Grand Central Station and take the New York Express Shuttle bus to JFK. I think it is $13. Will take you right to your terminal. When do you leave?

Unless they've stopped the service, there's also a special subway train that you can take directly to JFK. It's been a long time for me, so I can't remember where it leaves from. Grand Central Station? Penn Station? In any event, it costs more than the regular subways. By now it could be $15 or so.

Cancel the above suggestion. I just looked it up and they discontinued the service a long time ago. I wonder why? Maybe not enough customers. Looks like the bus is the way to go.

LIRR is the lower level of NY Penn Station. If you are taking Amtrak or NJ transit look for stairs downstairs and LIRR sign, which should be no problem to find. Most LIRR trains stop in Jamaica during non-rush hour. Otherwise, make sure that the train stops in Jamaica and buy your ticket prior to boarding to save $s. When arriving in Jamaica you will see the Airtrain terminal to your right, which is also very easy to take, you will need to purchace a Metrocard to pay for it. This is the easiest way to JFK (other than a cab) especially with luggage. It should take about 45 minutes.

The A-Train subway has always run from Penn Station out to Jamaica Queens with a stop at JFK where a fairly regular shuttle bus picks up for circling between terminals. I believe this was the run that got the advertising promo "Take the train to the plane" -- at least it was the track that had all those handbills up the last time I took it out to JFK.

Bro, forget about some of those suggestions above as they are very outdated.

The A train to the plane stopped years ago. and I also dont like taking the A train as it passes some of the worst neighborhood in NYC. Not the safest thing to do at nite. :wanker

Penn station is underground (between 31-33 street) and it is huge maze, but dont worry, since 9-11, there are more cops down there then people so just ask. Also lots of signs so cant really get lost.

1)Cheapest option: (not the fastest) about 1 hour 20min

From Penn Station: look for the E train subway on 8th ave/34th st ($2) and take this going toward Queens and get off at the Sutphin Blvd/JFK airport stop-next to last stop on the E train. Here, you will walk across the street and take the JFK sky train ($5) to the airport.

2)or from Penn Station: Take the LIRR to the Jamaica station in Queens (different name) but guess what--this is also the same stop on the E train (above--Sutphin Blvd). Here, same same--pay $5 extra and take same sky train to JFK.

This option is little more expensive as its faster--fewer stops on the LIRR to same destination. Also LIRR prices vary depending on the time of day(rush hours--double price, off hours-half price).Total time here should be about 50min-1hr.

Note: there are many LIRR train lines, so be sure to ask for one that stops at Jamaica, Queens station.

3)Taxi --most expensive( $25-35) depending on traffic- and time of day-could also take the longest time to get there.
