Hello Elmo, :D

Put your picture in My pictures on your computer and resize it so it fits the required size. It has to be 150 pixels by 100 pixels or less and no more than 60kb in size. You will need some software to resize it. Try this, it is called photogadget. You will need to download it on to your computer, when you go to the site click download, when the box comes up just click Run.Read the page the download comes on to see how it works, when using it for your picture put the sizes in the custom boxes and tick keep aspect ratio. Then click ok.that will put the picture in My pictures on your computer.

After you have resized your picture then go to My controls at the top of the page on this site and then when you enter that on the left hand side look for Edit Avatar Settings, click on that. Where it says upload a new image from your computer click on choose and that will take you to abox on your computer click on My pictures, click on the picture you want as your Avatar and click bottom right hand side where it say Open. This will put the link in the upload a new picture box, then just click Update Avatar and it will upload your picture as your avatar. You might have to log out and then log back in for it to take effect. I have found it can take a while to change, but that should do it.

Anyway welcome to the board. :bow :D :D

avatars can be found on the net at places like

http://sonic.net/jdf/gallery/animated

pick the avatar you want and right click on the picture, it will tell you the size of the avatar and the kb size

use properties (if using IE) and copy that url (right click copy and paste) which is its location for setting up in your "my controls"
