Old Cloughy has died aged 69.

I will mourn the passing of a great Character in our world of Football.

Like many other Englishmen regreting that he wasn't given the England Job. So many of our Sporting Bodies are too stuffy for their own good. The F.A. was more concerned about his personality, than his ability.

I shall raise a large Single Malt in his memory tonight ! :grin-jump

"I don't claim to be the best manager in the World, but I'm definitely in the top one" Anyone remember when he thumped that lad during a pitch invasion, and the reconciliation with him afterwards? Takes a big man to go on national TV and admit you were wrong. Truly the best manager England never had. RIP Cloughie. :crying :crying :crying :crying :crying :crying :crying :crying

Whilst a great manager, I'm not sure that Brian Clough was the best manager going. He certainly had his opinions and wasn't afraid to express them. He certainly could have made a better job of managing England than some of his contemporaries though some people who did a fantastic job at managing a club side were unable to make the transition to international level. Jock Stein comes to mind here (and I'm not a Celtic fan). He led Celtic to victory in the European Cup way back in 1967 becoming the first to British club to win that trophy. His record as Scottish manager was not that impressive but was absolutely brilliant when compared to the present incumbent. There again, your average bar girl could do a better job with her eyes closed than Vogts is doing! :D B) :D

My memory may be wrong here but I think that Rangers lost to Borussia Dortmund in the Cup Winners Cup Final in the same season that Celtic won the European Cup. They did however go on to win it a few seasons later.

Trevor Francis was on the BBC Breakfast show this morning and was recalling how Clough sent one of the Notts Forest players back up to his room to shave as they were about to board the bus to go to the ground for the European Cup final. It appears that they only arrived at the ground 45 minutes before kick off - not long enough for the players to start letting the match get on their minds.

Anyone that could turn the country's nastiest, ugliest centre forward (Kenny Burns) into a world-class defender and build his team's style of play around a fat, useless lump of lard (John Robertson) has got to have been a genius. :D

I hear your comments on Fat JR Cheshire but i am pretty certain quite a few fullbacks were driven dizzy marking him. :D

Duffaboy,

Sorry, it was tongue in cheek - I should have stuck in a smilie! ch) The good thing was that a few of those defenders were wearing England shirts at the time! B) The fastest I ever seen Robbo run was his celebration after he put his penalty past Joe Corrigan at Wembley. :cussing

A lot of credit should also go to Peter Taylor - he was the guy who spotted things in players no-one else could see.

Regards,

Tom

I see the knives are out for poor BC now that he is dead, the lilly livered fuckers at the FA did not have the balls to follow through there bribe investigation while he was alive.

Leave the poor fucker and his family alone, funny how the FA wankers are bleating now. I suppose Rick Parry will be remembered when he finally bites the bullet, Remembered my arse !!!!

I will always remember him being interviewed by the press, after the Court case of him hitting the pitch invaders.

He was asked what could be done about Football Hooliganism. He replied

" Simple" " I stop my two kids doing it" " You stop your one" Then pointing to the others he said " And you all stop yours"

I have always thought that was the words of a sensible, straight forward man.

The F.A ? If ever an Association had apt initials, it's this one.. But, The Jockey Club, M.C.C.- L.T.A, all a bunch of Pratts. The only time I backed the winner of The National at 66-1 (Esher Ness). it was abandoned due to a screw up at the start.

One journalist said he wouldn't trust a Jockey Club member to reverse his car into a parking space!

Rangers were beaten in the Cup Winners Cup Final in the same year 1967 1-0 by Bayern Munich. Borussia Dortmund won it the previous year beating Liverpool at Hampden Park in the final.
