The Beautiful Game - The Arsenal

Recommended Posts

I have just watched the highlights of the Arsenal (4) Charlton (0) match on the box.

Considering the crap I watch every week it is wonderful to see how the game is meant to be played :D

IMHO it does not get much better than I have just witnessed.

Henry is almost the complete player and I do not think I have ever seen anyone score a goal with a backheel like he scored today. I remember the Lawman scoring against MU with a backheel but that was from a much closer range.

Arsenal pass the ball around at such speed and the players seem to instinctively know where a team mate is going to run.

I admit to being a touch biased. Its over 20 years since I lived in London, you know the good old days when english was everyones first language, but once a Gunner always a Gunner :D

Hate Henry, Bender Pires, Moaner Wenger and the rest of the Gooners, is there any truth Wenger is spending his summer in Boyztown looking for a few personal signings. :D :D

Jambo,

As you know, I am in almost the reverse situation as a Jambo stuck down in Cheshire with leanings towards United.

If pushed, I would have to agree that The Gooners have put together some great performances during their unbeaten run and Wenger is to congratulated for the way he has put some great individuals together who are much more palatable to neutrals without the likes of Seaman, Adams and Keown. But, and there's always a but, until they do the business in Europe they will only be regarded as a great English team and not a great European team. Even though Arsenal overtook Forest's record a few weeks ago, Forest had a couple of European trophies to show off for their efforts. Can the Gooners do it this season? If I was a betting man, I'm not sure that I would fancy them over United and Chelsea. :banghead

Fancy Hearts for the EUFA Cup? :banghead

Jambo please change your name

Your obviously a saccanach and and Arsenal supporter

NOT a JAM TART

2guns  <grin  <grin  <grin

Leave it out John! :D

I have just returned from Tynecastle absolutely enriched by watching yet another 0 - 0 draw. :banghead Another European hangover I am afraid.

But I will be back for the next home (against the Hibs) like I have for the last 14 years - forever the optimist.

I have held season tickets at Highbury, the Villa and now the Jambo's. When I watched the Gunners and the Villa both had some great Scottish players but that was pre-Bosman and when the Schools still had playing fields!

I come from Highgate Village but my Granny was an "Anderson", born in Edinburgh, so I am as qualified to play for Scotland as a good number of Bertie's all stars : <laugh More so, if you take into account that I at least live in Scotland!

Tom,

I watched the game against SC Braga in my local (the Rainbow) which was packed!

Hearts did really well with De Vries once again turning up trumps. As we are not going to win the EUFA Cup I simply want us in a group with 4 top clubs. Newcastle would be nice :nod

Well, one consolation, Jambo ............. you won't have to travel to Fortress Ibrox.

Hearts must have a reasonable chance of making it to the knock out stages. Though you had better enjoy it while you can as it is looking at even this early stage of the season that Hearts' chances of qualifying for Europe next season ar going down the drain almost as fast as Celtic's chances of winning the European Cup

Why don't Hearts move the match against Hibs to Murrayfield? You would almost definitely get more fans in to watch the match than you can at Tynecastle?

You are right Jambo, if you really want to see a good game of football then Arsenal is where its at. Its not necessary to be an avid Arsenal supporter to appreciate the wonderful football they play.

Last year they were applauded by opposing fans even when they were kicking the ass of their team.

Arsenal and Arsene Wenger are good for football particularly english football. Long may they continue to play like this.

Alan,

Possibly, but we wouldn't have 18K+ supporters filling the stadium with the stands 10mtrs or so from the pitch!

Nothing better than stuffing the Hibs at Tyne apart from stuffing them, as normal, at Easter Road

A team that can only draw in Rosenborg and do nowt in Europe have no claims to greatness, Arsenal are a good team in a mediocre league

Roland,

I agree with you about the Premier league. Same as up here where there are two teams so far ahead of all the rest. The fact that Charlton are towards the top and Arsenal just brushed them away makes your point.

As for the Arsenal, I am inclined to think that they are a lot better than good. I know a great team when I see one and thats what I see when I catch them on the box.

When I was watching the Arsenal live they won just about fuck all. In turn I hated, Liverpool, Leeds and Man U. But now I am older, but definately not wiser, I know that I was simply jealous of those sides.

How I hated Bremner, Lorrimer, Giles etc but if I am honest..........................

I STILL DO <laugh

Arsenal is a great team in England and i admire their game, they play good and

have some world class players in Viera and Henry.

Bergkamp is still very good at 35.

But i wonder what Arsenal will do in Europe, i hope they meet my team in the knockout stage (Barcelona).

That should be some game. <laugh

Arsenal are great to watch at the moment,But i think Chelsea are ganna push the gunners all the way.Two horse race again this season.

Man Utd could do well in Europe if Rooney keeps fit & his temper under control. After his euro debut hes ganna be a marked man.

Arsenal are a great team in the Premiership.....Henrys goal against Charlton was something special but what about the goal Reyes scored to make it 4-0...brilliant !

But its strange that a team with their obvious quality cannot do it in Europe....scratching around for results against the likes of Rosenborg and PSV who would surely be strugglers in the Premiership.

I think that Man Utd and Chelsea seem better equipped for the Champions League.

Coming from South Manchester, maybe I'm saying that more in hope than expectation but a forward line of Ronaldo,Smith,Van Nistlerooy,Rooney and Giggs, with Scholes coming forward from midfield,at least looks impressive. The defence with Ferdinand back and the signing of Heinze should be adequate.

Its in midfield where United struggle. They have no-one creative.Keane has been a great servant but is reaching the end of his career. The likes of Kleberson,Djemba-Djemba,O'Shea or Phil Neville in midfield are not the answer. They have never adequately replaced Beckham.

Chelsea look a well organised team this year,if a little dour. They dont score enough goals but with Carvalho and a great player like Terry at the back, they wont concede many.

I reckon Arsenal will win the Premiership....2nd Chelsea,3rd United and 4th Newcastle......but I fancy either Chelsea or United to at least reach the semi-finals of the Champions League.

And congratulations to Crystal Palace winning last night....with poor teams like Southampton,Norwich,West Brom and even City,Blackburn and Fulham, maybe there is still some hope for them.

Hearts.....I always watch out for their results since being a small boy.I think that to stand a chance of coming above Celtic and Rangers they will have to sign my namesake, though !!

...

Zizou, :D

PSV Eindhoven has been a club on the par with Ajax in the Dutch league during the last 20+ years - I don't see them struggling in any league (except for the Serie A, but everyone is struggling there, anyway :P ).

As for Rosenborg: well, they are like a family, the majority of the players has been playing together for ages, they always show a great morale and they never give up on a game - I don't see them struggling anywhere, if it was possible to maintain their spirit in a different place/country. :D

To the topic: Arsenal is a great team, but not of a tie-breaker strength-type - meaning that they could win a championship in any league, even consisting of top-european teams, but when it comes to a head-to-head they obviously break on the psychological level, IMHO. :D

Group phase in the CL is closer to a straight head-to-head than to a league type of a competition, IMO. :P
