Do Thais wear engagement rings, as such? Me and my tee rak plan on getting

spliced next year ( :banghead ) but as I'm stuck in the UK until next Spring I don't

know how I could buy her one (not that she's asked, or even hinted). I

suppose I could send the money and let her go shopping with a friend, but

it doesn't seem very romantic. Alternatively, I could buy one here and send it

with a mate who's going to LOS at Christmas, but I'd probably end up

wasting my dosh on the wrong size or wrong type of ring. Anyone got any ideas?

Are you for real ?

You normally get a ring and then ask the girl to marry you. Perhaps more often these days you get her to choose after you ask her.

Whatever way, you don't send it in the post or with a friend nor do you give her some cash to buy it herself. Particularly not a Thai girl !

I've seen Thai girls with farangs wearing engagement rings but I don't think I've seen any married Thais with such.

Precisely. Which is why I was trying to find a better way. And waiting 5 months to ask her (when I can next get to LOS) was not an option.

I bought a diamond in the homeland {USA} and had it done in Thailand, as I wanted Thai Gold for the ring...It took 3 days to get done and was perfect...Any Gold Shop offers this service

I don't think I paid more than 4,000 Baht for the Thai Gold and it was about 500 Baht to have the diamond set...

Just another option to think about....

Please check your Embassy website for the rules to get legally married in Thailand, it will help you get a head start..

http://www.britishembassy.gov.uk/servlet/F...d=1068717516870

Most translation places near the Embassy offer a "service" to translate the documents {600 Baht} and then to take them to the Thai Legalization {2100 Baht}. This saves you many hours of running around in BKK, well worth the money spent and done within 24 hours. Amphur Office is easy and will cost you 500 Baht to complete..Make sure you get all Thai documents translated into English also.

Name change on her passport/Thai ID and you may be eligible to claim her on your taxes {can be done in USA}, I'm not sure of the UK rules...

I shopped for a diamond for my wife in LOS. I finally told her that they want to much in LOS. I didn't feel like hasseling with jewelry store in LOS. We tried at a couple of places but after 30 40 minutes of bargaining we walked out. I can get better/bigger diamonds with known quality here in the US for 30 -50 percent less that the lowest price I could get a store to go in LOS. I bought her a nice 5000 baht gold ring. She is very happy with that. and told her I would get her a nice diamond later. Maybe if I spoke better thai and was willing to really duke it out I could get a good deal in LOS. But I can go to the wholesale jewelery mart, or to Costco and get a great deal on a good diamond. I think that the diamond wedding rings are manly geared towards the farang market.

I think Greg's method is the best. You can't get quality gold here in the US. get the diamond from bluenile.com, costco, or wholesale jewelry mart, and have it put on ring in LOS.

DONT, DONT, DONT send it in the mail. unless you want to give some postman customs officer a nice gift.

And as for having a friend bring. Better check, that could be bad luck. My wife wanted some gold so I told her I would give her Baht and she could go buy. She said "no, that bad luck". I had to buy it and give it to her. :beer :nod
