I am looking at booking my next flight through Narita, Japan. I will have a 2hr 30 min layover there. I am wondering if anyone has any experiences from there? Is it a pain in the ass, or no worries? I'll be travelling from the USA and the flight arrives at terminal 2 gate A62 and departs terminal 2 gate A64, but do i have to clear customs/baggage inspection and all that happy shit? Is there an airport tax? Looking for info, thanks, and BTW I have looked at the Narita website, but it doesn't really say anything about clearing customs if transient. Thanks

I have flown to Thailand and Vietnam through Narita twice. Both times, no problems although it can be confusing when you first land. But there are tons of airport personnel there to help. One time I was required to get on a bus and go to another terminal. The other time, it was merely a switch to another gate in the same terminal. You will have to go through security again while in transit, but you do not have to pick up your luggage. That can be checked straight through. No airport tax for those in transit.

Transit at Narita is fairly simple. Once you are off the plane and in the outer terminal follow the signs that say transit. They will take you to the security area. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. They’ll check your boarding pass send your carryon baggage through an x-ray machine and you’ll be sent through a metal detector. From there follow the signs for departures which will take you into main terminal. In the terminal there are shops, restaurants, bars and most importantly shower facilities. They all take US Dollars so no need for currency exchange. As stated previously there's no departure tax.

I have travelled through Narita at least ten times in the past two years. I personally detest the place. When you get off the plane and have only a two hour layover you will just follow the signs for connecting flights. You will have to go through a security check again where you will need your passport and boarding pass. Your carrry on bags will be screened again. If it is the busy time there you will stand in long lines waiting to get through the checkpoints. The teminal that I usually end up in has plenty of shops for food to eat. There is also a place where you can pay a certain amount of money to use their showers. Nice to be able to clean up after a 12 hour flight. There is a lower section in the teminal that has some nice couches where you can lay down and get a little sleep. (If you are a heavy sleeper be careful as you will not hear your flight called.). The Japanese are known for trying to organize everything and so you may be moved from one line to another. You will not have to pay any gate tax. Hope this helps a little.
