I've been to this great island a few times. At the southern end of W/sand Beach there is the Plaloma Cliff Resort. An a/cond room in the older wing was about thb1600 when I was there last Nov. It has a great pool, and overall good feel. The owner is a Swiss who can usually be found relaxing in the open plan foyer. As the name suggests, it's built on a cliff so no direct beach access.

I've also stayed at Cookies guesthouse which is about in the middle of town. An a/cond bungalow right on the edge of the beach set me back thb1400 last June. Nothing flash but a great location. Their restaurant is pretty good and has nightly seafood BBQ's right on the beach. (BTW they have a newish 3 storey hotel opposite on the inland side if this is more to your liking).

One place I'll advise you to avoid is the White Sand Beach Resort. It's accessible via a long steep (REALLY steep) driveway at the top of the hill overlooking town, or by a 1km walk along the beach. A TG and I stayed there and were basically stranded for 2 days, except for the beach at low tide. The tap water was brown and we both ended up with infections. Enough said.

Lastly, it's well worth your while to call in at the Blue Lagoon Bar almost opposite the Plaloma Cliff Resort. It's run by a Pom called Nigel and his Thai wife Noi. Had a ball there every time I've been, and the girls are great. :P

I stayed at Mac Resort Hotel right in the middle of White Sands Beach. Wanted 2200 baht but came down to 1900 per night for 4 nights including breakfast. Nice pool looking onto beach and ringed off so beach traders can't hustle you. Very friendly and helpful staff. Would recommend it to all to try out.
