I want to use my air miles for an upgrade, but I'm not sure what to do as the EVA website isn't too helpful.

Can I buy a ticket and order an upgrade from anywhere or do I have to go through EVA? And what exactly do you have to do?

monkeyman,

Well, I book on line with EVA then call them to do the upgrade.

Don't wait too long after you book so, you can get good seats.

You'll find a phone number here:

http://www.evaair.com/html/b2c/english/global_tools/couns/

I would think you could buy a ticket anywhere and get an upgrade as long as it

was not one of the following, better call them if, you plan to buy somewhere else.

Holders of the following tickets can not reserve a free upgrade in advance:

Various free or special offer tickets, such as free tickets, tickets with no face value, and free or discount travel/airline industry tickets,

Barter tickets,

Group tickets,

Special promotion fare tickets, (Ex: Holding R/H booking class tickets )

Free upgrades are allowed upon airport check-in and are subject to seat availability

with sufficient Electronic Miles or Electronic Upgrade Certificates

For May I'm on standby for business class (really don't expect to get it) on the long legs.

On the A330 legs got upgraded to Premium Laurel Class. I have in the past done the upgrade from economy to evergreen deluxe. Never a problem with EVA except for delays due to fog in Taipei.

monkeyman,

1. Phone EVA's London office and check the availability in the class you want to book in and the class you want to upgrade to. They should, at this point, tell you the class the agent should book the ticket in (H, L, V or whatever). They are well-used to being asked the same question.

2. Book with a decent agent that understands EVA's system - I used Trailfinders who actually phoned EVA whilst I was there to confirm the process.

3. Once you are booked with your agent and have the EVA booking reference (not the agents) call EVA back and request the upgrade. They will confirm everything is OK.

4. Your ticket will probably show the class you originally booked in (an accounting thing apparently) but the EVA reservation system will have your booking cross-referred into the upgraded class. Clear as mud?

5. Go to the airport and hope.

Have a good trip.

Regards,

Tom
