DSL Performance and Vonage/VOIP/etc

Recommended Posts

A number of posts recently on DSL not performing well or being "spotty" or dropping out altogether.

Anyone know what happens to their internet long distance phone when this is going on? Any experiences worth passing along?

I use Skype for both outgoing and incoming calls. There are times when it's great and others when it's bloody useless.

My brother phoned me from Scotland today whilst I was downloading music from a couple of sites. The quality was OK though there was a bit of an echo at my end some of the time (possibly due to me downloading music).

I have had Vonage for a number of years, and bring it with me on my travels. At best, it is marginal in Pattaya, due to the reliably of steady upstream and downstream bandwidth. Forget about Hotels, as it never worked there, and if you use it in an Internet Café, make sure that you go when they are not busy, and it will work fine, but when it gets busy, the traffic simply drops the VOIP off.

When I lived in Jomtiem, I never could have DSL installed in my Condo (Thanx TOT), so I could never try it there.

IMHO, Thailand needs better Broadband for VOIP.

Stop being Keenyow and get the good DSL. I have TOT business gold - it's 3k baht a month, and is fast. No problem VOIP - I call everywhere.

you get what you pay for.

That's expensive even by American standards. My internet is $19.99 a month DSL and it's fast. Just tested, 1740.6 kbps, that's good enough for me.

The real test is what is the upload speed? You need both for a reliable connection.

I am using Vonage on my Tot Business Gold. I have Vonage cranked up to the highest bandwidth too. It is perfect.

It isn't too much money when it works.

Its quite a bit- there are equally good and much cheaper services from various IPSs - TOT is not known for quality at least not in Bangkok :D But I used to work for a major competitor of TOT in Bangkok so I may not be the person to ask :D

cheers
