Well in Aug or Sep will have to go back to the UK ,for new o img visa and visit

my children back in the UK.

so just started to see if any bargins out there at moment,

I use this web site,I have used this web site for last two years to find flights

http://www.kayak.co.uk/

as it looks at all airlines and find cheapest flights for you,

But WHY is it different price to fly from Bangkok to UK ,than UK to Bangkok

Same airline, same airports, same dates, but not same price

To fly from Bangkok to UK cheapest found was £720 :ang2

To fly from UK to Bangkok cheapest found about £530

Have any xpats found what I am saying is true :banghead

As I have never had to fly this return route before am I missing a trick :banghead

Is it cheaper findind a flight using a Thai travel agent here in Thailand for a return flight

back to the UK <huh

In a single word "Tariff", each country sets the tariff for such things. Thailand's tariff structure is most likely high, similar to Canada, which is near 100%

Tariff?

It has nothing to do with tariffs and everything to do with the pound's crap rate of exchange. Buy a camera from LOS and it's going to cost more than 18 months ago , as is a bag of jasmine rice at Wing Yip. Buy a flight ticket originating in LOS, the US or EU and it's going to cost more than it did 18 months ago if you pay in GBP.

There will be a lot of pressure on airlines' UK schedules over the next 12 months simply because few of the airlines' cost are in GBP and therefore current exchange rates will be making some of those routes unprofitable at current ticket prices.

At least Thai are saving money on their wage bill at LHR. Pity there's only a handfull of workers there. The big saving will be on their handeling costs with SK.

Spare a thought for my friend who has worked for them for 25 years. Her Pension is based in Thailand and the last retirement forecast, was £1,000- per year !! That was when the ex rate was about the 60bht mark. so it might be up to £1,450 now.

nidnoyham,

I am flying KUL-STN on Sat, the 28th March. Decent timings ..... out of KUL at 10:00 and into STN for !6:00.

AirAsia X is a low-cost carrier so all the normal 3 month ticket rules etc go out of the window. Managing to book both outward and return when there is a promotion on is the only trick that you need to perfect.

You need to make separate bookings BKK-KUL and KUL-STN.

The contact in Chaing Mai has mentioned Air Aisa to me as an alternative. Time is getting on, I will have to grasp the nettle and get things going. There should be no problem with the visa, as it is her 5th one. The exch rate is up a bit, so next week will be shit or bust time.

Oh, and if Si ends up on your flight, I don't want any mile high post from you with her. :allright

Poor girl, all she will remember will be a swirl of a kilt, a whiff of Old Spice and a feeling of unfullfilment. :allright

Thanks fro the advise though.

nidnoyham,

I'm up front with the posh folks ....... cost less than 940 quid (incl baggage allowance, seat selection and scoff both ways) which is 600-700 quid less than I'd normally be paying on Qatar.

I've been down in KL the last couple of weeks (back in LOS at the moment for Chinese New Year) and go back down this weekend until I the end of March. I've spoken to a couple of folk from Air Asia and they reckon that the aircraft on the Stansted route is going to be fitted out pretty good. From my point of view, I couldn't care less for posh food and vanity kits etc so it's a good deal since I'll be in KL anyway.

Just spoke to Si, she reckond KUL is about 2 hours from BKK ?

In the next day or two, I will get my mate in CNX, to book the best deal from BKK.

A quick question.

I have got the price of a KUL-LHR-KUL ticket from Air Asia on their own web-site.

The price is converted from their local currancy- £501+ taxes etc. If I use a Thai travel agent, will I be quoted in Thai Baht, perhaps making it dearer, for the same flight ? I want them to arrange the BKK-KUL conex for me. I keep having trouble with the Air Asia web-site.

Be persistant w/the Air Asia website.I haven't had a problem with 4 bookings but it's worth the effort.

I got a price on EVA for about £850 from the travel agent so, I asked for a non direct flight. Waiting to hear back.

I just got a price for KUL-STN-KUL on Air Asia of £501- that's more like it. The web is not responding for a BKK-KUL-BKK quote.

That is for 30MAR KUL-STN. 30 JUN STN-KUL.

I am flexible on dates, but am trying to avoid Easter and high summer for the return leg.

01 May ex BKK and 30 Jul ex STN are the latest dates. Any 3 months between 01 Apr- 30 JUL will do, as long as it is a 3 month ticket. JUL is a bit late, but who knows, by then, no bugger may be flying. :banghead

I would jump all over the 501 and work out the KUL-BKK segment whenever.Hell as a last resort-take the train!

airlines don't think in terms of one way tickets. Quite simple. They assume (and I believe rightfully so) 99% of all purchase will be roundtrips.

They than let natural progression of laws of supply and demand take over. Right now, from anywhere in the world it costs more to book originating from bangkok than originating from somewhere else and going to bangkok. Why...simple...the demand to go to thailand is very low right now. Thus is the lower the price, the hope is it will spur demand.

And than you have subsidations of fares. This happens alot in true tourist destinations. Be it from TA's, private organization, or government. Go check Orlando Florida to Chicago RT and than compare same routing same airline except make it CHicago to Orlando round trip. Same thing with Las Vegas. Fares going to "tourist" destinations are typically lower than fares leaving that destination.

The spread for originating a round trip ticket to and fro Thailand versus from and to Thailand is probably at an all time high right now. For obvious reasons....thank you PAD, thank you global meltdown.

whilst I think I have my head properly wrapped around why same routing, same airline, same dates can yield different fares based on what side was the origin,...this is one I can't figure out. I will use a real live example

UA...HK to Savannah, Georgia. It will route you HK to CHICAGO direct, connect in Chicago to Savannah. Say the posted RT rate is 4K USD$. But if I ask for fare HK-CHICAGO, same day same airline, same routing as the HK_SAVANNAH ticket the HK CHICAGO ticket is significantly more expensive, like 10% more....figure that one out????
