I'm currently writing a trip report but my bandwidth has been exceeded on Photobucket so I am unable to post any more photos with my trip report and all the photo links I have put in place for my last instalment of the trip report are unable to be seen because of this. Now I'm not willing to pay for upgrading my account on Photobucket to enable me to have greater bandwidth so what I did was delete a previous album containing lots of photos for previous trip reports to free up some space. However, when I checked the old trip reports the photos can still be seen even though I have deleted their links on Photobucket. How can this be? Surely the links will not work now if they have been deleted?

 

I'm a bit if a layman when it comes to computers so I was just wondering how free bandwidth on a site like Photobucket works? If I delete an album to free up space does this not matter, I have to wait another month for it to be reset before I can change things? And what other sites will offer me free space s I can continue with my report?

The pics are probably sat in your cache. Clear it and try again.

If I understand correctly, deleting a folder won't make any difference. Photobucket limits how many times the pictures in your account have been accessed (basically); if that number of times has been exceeded then you have to wait until next month. Note that "next month" is the day after tomorrow. However, you could always just make another account, then that account will have the same bandwidth limit as the other one, effectively doubling your bandwidth allowance for free. Fook knows why they limit you given that you can do this.

OK. It works like this.

 

There are two things that are limits in hosted storage sites such as Photobucket and others

 

1 - storage space, and

2 - bandwidth

 

item 1 determines how much stuff you can put up on their site

 

item 2 determines how many times stuff stored on their site (item 1) can be transmitted (i.e. viewed) within a given time frame (usually a month)

 

A simple example to illustrate.

Let's imagine that a site allows you to store 1M and allocates 1G of bandwidth per month.

For simplicity, we'll stipulate that 10 * 100K = 1M and 1000 * 1M = 1G.

 

Lets imagine that you have 10 pictures, each 100K, on the site.

Under the conditions just described, people accessing the site can look at one of the hosted pictures 10,000 times in a month (10,000 * 100K = 1G)

Or 10 of the pictures 1000 times (10 * 100K * 1000 = 1G).

Or any other combination producing the same result.

 

After a month has transpired (or whatever the stipulated time frame in the hosting agreement) the tally of used bandwidth is reset and a new round begins.

 

I would imagine that come July 1st things should clear up for your report (for a while at least)

 

If you buy a PRO acct at photobucket I believe you'll get unlimited bandwidth, or at least a substantial increase.
