I see i'm in good company here what with all that priceless knowledge . I've done 2 pilgrimages to PTY and have been addicted ever since . Anyway i'll be there from Aug6 - Aug11 with the guys and am looking into renting a car for 5 days .  Problem is NONE of my buddies ( myself included ) have a driver's licence ( before anyone brings out the knives you might want to find out how much it cost to get one is SG $2,500; if you pass the fist time !! )

We're responsible lads ( uh huh !! ) but we really need help here . Would like 1 from BKK so that we save cost on the way back but 1 in PTY should do fine .

A drink or 2 to anyone with info

Thanks !!

Bernard

Go to the Alamo Bar, soi 8 on the same side as Flipper Lodge about 10 meters away. Talk to Gary the owner. He can help you. Pay for two beers and tell him to hold them for Denny (guy with the $88USD airfare from JFK-BKK). Tell him I will be in to collect them in October.  ;D ;D ;D

If you do rent a car in Thailand make sure you have a valid license to drive within the country. The rental car companies don't seem to care but the police sure do. I know that the licenses issued by the states within the US are not valid in Thailand. For visitors from the US you need a international drivers license or a Thai license. Don't know the requirements for visitors from other Asian countries.

If stopped for a ticket and the police ask you to pay a fine, aggree and respectfully ask for a receipt.  You may find that they substancially reduce the fine or even drop it.  Do not get into a pissing contest with the police it can ruin your vacation.

Make sure you have max. insurance.  If you are involved in a accident you are at fault.  Accept it, this is thailand.  Their logic is, if you weren't here you would not have been involved in the accident, so your fault.

Savvy,,

Are you a farang?  When the cops see a farang there's always the chance they may pull him over and make up some charge to get a bribe.  If you are Asian, the risks of this go way down as they are not likely to spot you as a non-Thai.

I'm not sure how common it is, but I have heard of it happening (I've also heard of the cops relenting when shown a Thai license).
