Tropical Bert's on soi 6/1

Recommended Posts

I had fish and chips for dinner tonight. Large piece of tasty well cooked fish. Fries and pies were also tasty. Cost was 220 Baht.

tried the F&C there yesterday. The fish was hot and tasty (I burned the roof of my mouth) The chips were cold and the portion was small.

You must've had it on a special as mine was 250 plus 35 for coke.

300 including tip makes it the most expensive that I know of. I can also think of 2 or 3 places where the fish is nicer still but I did enjoy it.

That price is quite different from the one BigD reported. His 220b meal included a pie too.

This bears a closer look.

Chow Soy is my current favorite at 140b.

240 Baht in Sizzler gets you fish 'n chips (or baked tattie) plus pasta+tuna, choice of soups, a huge choice of salads and a choice of desserts. Good value.

I was just there 3 -4 days ago.

they had a few customers for lunch when I was there so that seemed decent esp for that time of day. The Katoey waitress seemed up to the task of serving customers as well.

Did you try it?

I think I will later as I've had my fill of F&C's lately.

Tried the sizzling seafood hotplate and it wasn't very good at all.

240 plus 25 for rice plus 30 for coke. 310 including tip.

just lame chop suey and nothing at all like this.

Did you try it?

tried it today. not memorable for any reason

No tartar sauce

batter was thin and tasteless

chips were raw in the middle (I used to work in a chippy and know all about double cooking chips)

fish portion was generous

chips portion was small

decent value @140 but would rather pay more for better.

the menu claimed there was free delivery rather than the D2D up charge of 50 baht

was still picking away at it when the waitress just took it away from me without a word. I guess she's used to people who don't finish their food there. Went to get a Lamb Kebab on LK metro afterwards .

I've tried Goose's and the Jolly Friar, Tropical Bert's and the Pig and Whistle, Simon's and the Butchers Arms as well as the Village Chippy and Neeroy's and probably some others that I can't remember.

Top 2 were the Jolly Friar (when Ian owned it) and Goose's. Bottom 2 were Neeroy's and the Pig and Whistle based on taste alone. Each has their place but the Pig and Whistle is the only one where it was just plain meh at full price. Deffo should steer away from the P&W.

Chow Soy has a value at 140 but not worth a recommendation otherwise AFAIC. If someone is that cheap then they should eat Neeroy's.

I've been meaning to give Neeroy's a try. For my preference, I prefer Chow Soy to Gooses, Jolly Friar or Punch and Judy...all of which I have tried and failed to enjoy.

The quality at Chow Soy does vary a bit too much. I've been disappointed there on occasion, but still go back hoping for a good one.

I tried Simons yesterday and it was really good, probably the best i have had, i have tried Gooses and the Jolly Friar and thought they are just ok, i wouldnt go back to either one. Simons is as close to the UK fish and chips as you can get. I had the F + C in Bang Chang today and it was also really good

  • 2 months later...

Had fish and chips at the Jolly Friar on Soi Lengkee and it was the worst I've ever eaten. Think it was Dory? I can still remember the first mouthful nearly two years later. It was just some sort of mush inside the batter. Like microwaved baby food. Yuck.

Are they still in business?

I believe so.

I hear various Fish and Chip shops or places for Fish and Chips being recommended but to be honest it is a meal 'off my list' now for some time. For exactly the reason you suggested.....good old cod, or grouper is expensive and something cheap gets substituted in many places and you end up with some insipid mush inside the batter. I like the meaty flakes of grouper, but even at my Thai restaurant, where I used to have a freshly killed whole one steamed I am less likely to order it due to the way the price has gone. The snapper is inferior.

I've had the cod (Norwegian) at a few places and it always was dry, tasteless and/or freezer burnt and of course more expensive.

Edit. I will usually add 4 or 5 splashes of vinegar on my fish and was shocked to see this bloke at Simon's add 20 or so splashes to his (not to mention salt) and 2 minutes later he added about 10 more. How can anyone tell if their fish was decent if they add that much vinegar?

Do they really do Grouper in batter?

When I want Grouper I go to the Chinky/Thai place on the corner of Chaiyapoon (sp?) and Third Road. Absolutely delicious. In fact all the food they serve is delicious and of course at sensible pricing for Pattaya.

I have brought TGs to eat there and they all said it was very good food. You probably all know the place, I'd be surprised if you expats had never eaten there. Not atall fancy just delicious food.
