It's a good reminder that it is smart to check where the exits are in any Thai establishment. I was in Bangkok at NYE 2009 and by pure chance declined an inviation to be at Santika. Several friends did go and fortunately they managed to get out safely but many others didn't. Since then more stringent fire regulations, like many Thai laws, started becoming more stringently enforced but over time they have been largely ignored again.

When you scrutinize it; can be alarming how few actually have fire/emergency exits, and the few that do are often poorly marked. Entrances are often choke points and in the case of places like gogos, often covered in drapes which are of course likely not fire retardent and more likely highly combustible.
