I did it. The hardest part was getting a bank account in Thailand which was not absolutely needed but the immigration guys wanted to see one. I had letter stamped from U.S. embassy for income above 65K bhat. The whole thinh took me a few days of running around but it was still easier then getting it before I came. One thing that can help is to have a TG that knows some English with you. It seemed to smooth things when they found out I had a Thai GF. Who knew. Good luck and don't worry too much.

I broke the rule and came on a tourist visa. I went to immigration in Jomtein and changed from tourist to retirement. I showed them a health certificate, bank book and statement of income from U.S. embassy. It was a pain but I did it. It worked out better then getting it in the U.S. under my particular circumstances. Jan 2007

I live in central Thailand now. I alternate between staying in the village and a small apartment in small town with air and internet. The village is dying. Most of the employable people are working in Bangkok. If a girl is the least bit saleable she works in bar in Pattaya, Puckett or Bangkok. Any money they can scrape together goes to pay interest to the bank on the family debt or buy lottery tickets. The only families that have any hope are those that have a farang in the picture.

I had problems about the same time. A few sites could be reached but some like hotmail failed. Cleared up and now everything ok. Happens to me when it rains in central Thailand.

I'm not going to be able to get my retirement visa before arriving. I have been scanning the net and consulates and the information is confusing and contradictory. Here is what I want to do if possible: Arive Pattaya next two weeks on tourist visa. Apply for retirement visa while in country instead of in the U.S. Questions: Can I apply for the retirement visa while in country?
