power adapters or volt converters needed?

Recommended Posts

I forgot about this until the last minute...

I have a laptop that runs on anywhere from 120-240 volts and 50-60hz, standard USA 2-prong plug.

I also have a mobile phone charger that runs on anywhere from 120-240 volts and 50-60hz, standard USA 2-prong plug.

I'd like to plug both in at my room at Residence Garden.

My understanding is that Thailand generally uses the same 2-prong setup as the U.S.... however thailand runs on 220 volts whereas the U.S. is 120 volts. So, my guess is that I can use both the items described above with no adapter or volt converter.

anyone with experience on this? I've sent an email to Ib as well.

Correct, the chargers that come with the equipment are effectively transformers bringing the voltage up or down to the required level.

The only exception is in Japan where it is 110v and the US stuff cannot get it down that far. Buy it in Japan and it will go 110-250v.

I thought that the outlets in Thailand were the two pronged but round outlets requiring a transformer from the American flat prong. I could be wrong as I did not bring a laptop or any other item that required recharging.

Alot of the hotels have the 'flat' outlets that match the US 'flat' plugs. One of the problems you can have using a 3 prong plug with a ground, is not being able to plug it in. Some laptops will not work or charged unless the ground prong is also pluged in.

Just to be safe I just bring a converter and use it. I also bring a small power strip and plug it into my converter and then I can plug and use several items at the same time. If the hotel room is limited on outlets this can be very useful since your GF will need one outlet to keep her cell phone charged at all times.

Most AC outlets in Thailand accept flat or round pin plugs .....volatge is 220V.

You can buy an adapter for around 50 THB in most of the computer shops or places like Tesco lotus / Big C
