Anyone have info about new airport?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I have a friend flying into Thailand on Feb 6 and another coming Feb 17. Does anyone know if they will be using the Suvarnabhumi Airport or will they be flying into Don Muang? I know that Suvarnabhumi Airport had a completion date at the end of 2004, but I have not heard if they are open yet.

thanks

Jim

Given the Thais "planning and organizational skills", :P I would think sometime in the second half of 2006. :D

At the end of November my taxi passed the new airport on the way from Pattaya to Bangkok, looks a lot of work still to be done. Given their track record with BTS and MTR end of 2006 looks more likely. IMHO :D

Thanks guys, 1 friend already has reservations at Nana. the other is flying into BKK and then to Vietnam the next day. He will be flying back to Bkk with about 16 hour between flights and we were wondering if he would be closer to Pattaya than Don Muang. I guess he will just have to find something to do in Bangkok. I told him there is a bookstore near Nana hotel, by the 7-11, if he gets too bored!

Hope the new airport is open by Songkran 2006 as I'll be wanting to escape the madness for a week or so 1luv What's the likely transport time from the new airport to Pattaya?

New airport to Pattaya travel time should be about 75 minutes in average traffic, depending on how well they manage the road building around the local area.

This seemed to be a serious concern in some articles I read in the Bangkok Post and Nation newspapers last November.

Possible the airport will open in September, but without the local infrastructure fully finished.

I was looking at the weekly photos earlier this evening. They’ve made quite a bit of progress in the last couple months. Will it open in 260 days? Your guess is as good as mine.

I was going to shrink a couple of the pictures and post them. Then I decided that since they are probably copyrighted, it would be better to post the URL.

I wouldn’t recommend that you look at the full size photos without broadband because at 3 Meg they still take a while to load.

When I was in Pattaya in December I read in the Bangkok Post that they had some cracking of concrete problems on some of the upper floors and were worried about a possible failure similiar to an airport earlier this year in Europe. They believe that this problem was caused by the current attempt to open on time. I don't know if this problem was corrected, but if it wasn't, then we could see a delay.

lets hope its more successful than manila airport.

Its been completed for a year and still not in use. One still has to travel with the unwashed masses through Manila.

The reason its not open is because of beaurocracy, mismanagement and of course corruption!
