Your mobile phone in Thailand

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I will be comming for a ten day holiday in about five weeks and I was wondering if I bring my mobile with me. Can Thai sim cards be bought cheaply and easily. If so which ones do you reccommend and on arrival at the airport where can they be bought.

your phone needs to be an unlocked phone, sim cards with minutes can be bought at a 7-11

Not all cards work on all phones, my phone would not take an orange card, only 1-2 call worked on my phone. Usually a nokia can take all cards. Its good to know the frequency of your phone first. Thailand is a 900 1800 mhz frequency

Thanks for your reply mate, my phone is a siemens S55 and its frequency is 900 1800/1900 mhz frequency and the sim is unblocked. Hopefully that will work. So you mentioned that they can be bought at a 7 eleven, what one could you or anyone viewing this recommend in terms of price and reliability.

Thanks

An unlocked Siemens should work with any card on the market.

You need to buy the SIM card (number), you can get at phoneshops, for instance in Big C North Pattaya (upper floor) or the new Tuk.com center (2nd floor).

Expect to pay around 300 Bt including 50 Baht value for airtime.

To top up the card you can go practically anywhere, like family mart, 7/11, ....

Cheapest minutes are with an Orange Co. Sim Card, but the quality and net availability might be a problem sometimes. In Bangkok or Pattaya they are ok, but in more remote areas they very often don't work whereas others (AIS, DTAC) do.

If you won't need your phone outside Pattaya, Orange gives you the best prices.

Quite right.

I think the best value & advice can be had from the myriad of shops in the corner on the 1st floor of Big C supermarket/shopping mall (opposite Soi2 North pattaya) They will unlock your phones for you as well.

Incidentally, I found the instructions on how to unlock my mobile myself on the internet, which saved me a whopping 100 baht. I can now get another beer or a fifth of a short time-but which fifth I hear you ask!!!???
