You need an international drivers license to be legal. You can rent a car without one but if you have an accident the insurance company may use this as a excuse to not pay.

What insurance ????

Most cars rented on 2nd road and Beach road in Pattaya do not even have a proper insurance, other than sometimes the of-no-use obligatory government insurance.

The only car-rental company that I know offering a decent insurance is VIA car rental opposite Royal Garden on 2nd road and of course the Hertz and Avis companies.

Many 4-wheel jeeps and cars rented out from Beach road do not even have a valid number plate and road-tax sticker (years out of date), and are therefore forbidden to drive out of the Pattaya region.

Cheers,

Check your travel insurance as for some companies even the International Driving Permit is not enough. They want you to have a local licence, not all companies but some..

I got an Internatonal Drivers Licence from the RAC earlier this year. It cost a mere £5.50. As said above, the form can be obtained from their web-site.

I posted the request for the licence on a Monday morning and received it on the Wednesday morning. Now, that's what I call service.
