baht bus fare to Jontiem

last year I got on the baht bus at the stand at 2nd and s. pattaya rds. at around midnight...got off a couple blocks into Jomtien beach and gave the driver 10bt...

same amount about half hour later to the res gardens..no problems..

are the fares still the same?

Reason i ask is i've been seeing some (albeit older) posts on the web where folks are saying drivers had demanded 80 -100 bt for shared.. not hired rides.

I could understand it at 4am but don't want to get stuck paying that during normal running hours

I have always paid 10 Baht from the 2nd Road and Pattaya Tai to The Arch where the police box is.

I like to ride my motorbike so I don't worry much about getting cheated except when getting a flat repaired....But the fare you are talking about is 10 baht, unless the driver is trying to cheat you.

I stay at View Talay, which is shortly before the archway and I never pay more than 10 baht for the trip from South Pattaya Road.

You should try to pay with a twenty and get 10 baht back,LOL

I'm a true Scot and object to paying more than I really have to. I collect 5 and 10 baht coins just so I have the correct change for the baht buses.

 

There are times when I will hand over a 20 baht note, especially if the driver's gone on to Jomtien from Central Road or wherever.

that's a good point Bangkapiboy, i find it very annoying when you have a TG with you & they expect 20 bht. i.e. double fare for the Thai aswell just cos the farang is paying.

If you read the sticker in the bus, the maximum fare is not over Bt10 per person no matter how far you go.

 

It is true however that very few drivers will go from Jomtien to Naklua but the principle remains the same. In fact, you could be asked / or pay less than Bt10.

Last week I went from View Talay to Big C in North Pattaya. I paid a 20 baht bill for 2 farrangs. Then the baht bus driver's lady doesn't want to accept it and says it's 20B per person, because we're tourists and Big C is far. I just held the 20B up from the curb and said -- "do you want it or not"? She said OK and the baht bus drove away. I am not a tourist. :)

You are right probably. I haven't gone to Naklua in a very very long time.

 

 

Oh and on Sukhumvit the fare is always 5B because there is no tourist baht bus mafia on Sukhumvit. These baht busses are a completely mafia I guess. :)

Elbow sorry for the delay in sending you info on apartments because my telephone line has been down since Friday, will email when it comes back, (just spent 10 mins writing long PM but still no go!!)

 

Asfar as baht buses go it is still basically 10 baht aride to anywhere, just get out the bus and hand the guy 10 baht, no problem, start asking about it and maybe a different story.

Whilst in Pattaya, I regularly travel from Jomtien Beach Condo (about 1.5 km along Jomtien Beach Road from the arch) to North Pattaya Big C, I have paid 10Bht most times, however on my last trip an irate Baht Bus driver was adamant it was 20 (I did protest, but followed the advice of more seasoned visitors and paid up without causing too much of a scene).

Question, was I ripped off, or am I just a tight Tw*t who should pay up as I have the dosh.

I don't know anything about zones etc but if I remember I'll ask at the next Ex-Pats meeting I go to.

 

If heading to Jomtien from Soi 7, I just jump on the first bus that comes along. When he gets to Walking Street, I check to see which way he is going to turn at 2nd Road. If he is going left, I press the buzzer, get off and hand him 10 baht. If he turns righht, I will stay on. Sometimes they might indicate that this is as far as they are going, in which case I will get off and payt him 10 baht.

 

I seldom ask a driver if he is going to a specific location unless I'm carrying something heavy as all drivers will interpret such a request as a private hire.

Bottom line the maximum fare for ANY journey is 10 baht. So by impeccable Thai logic that is what falangs pay and anybody accompanying a falang becomes an honorary falang for this purpose.

 

Keep a supply of 10 baht coins, hand one to him and walk away, never ever engage them in conversation.

 

Any problems pull out your mobile and utter the magic words Tourist Police.

 

If you must save 5 baht then hand your girl 5 baht and she can hand it to him separately as if you are not together but is it really worth it for 5 baht?

That's exactly what I do Alan.

 

Also find it usually works quite nicely, if you have a girl in tow, give her 15 bht, let her pay & I just walk away. If they haven't seen you give it her, maybe they think the girl is paying....which, in my experience, most decent girls will happily do anyway if you have no change.

 

Yeah i know 5 bht is no big deal, its not the value, its the principle

 

If I'm alone & have to pay with a 20 note, i just keep my arm in the cab so they can't drive away (hopefully!) with my hand held out, they usually get the message pronto.

 

There should always be a sticker (red & white I think) in the back of every bus, explaining the zones, but its difficult to work it out.

I've always thought if i got into a serious arguement i'd just whip my camera out, photograph the sticker & the bus, then pay them what they were asking. Would frighten them to death!

 

From anything north of Pattaya Klang or South of Jomtien arch, I just hand over 20, I don't consider it an unreasonable amount for the lenght of the journey and it saves any hassle......i'm there to enjoy life & I'm looking for an easy life, not problems.

 

As for not asking them anything.....never more so than when going to the Air con bus station with luggage. Asking will result in 100 bht private hire. Just jump in any moving bus (you know what i mean), change over at Dolphin round-a-bout if necessary.

 

.....and finally! Whilst we're on the subject of baht buses, anybody know about a free one that runs to Tesco Lotus on the road from Dolphin R-a-B to the Air con bus station?
