Nice aircraft ..... but I can't see that it will make any difference to us for routes from/to BKK. Thai doesn't seem to be able to make the US non-stops work so I can't see any US carriers trying the route in reverse in the immediate future. I do have to say that its "little sister" the 777-200ER flown by Singapore was particularly comfortable and I'm sure Thai's 777-300ERs will be equally so when they are delivered.

Filling up a 747 or 777 for a direct flight from the US to LOS is difficult. At least 1/2 the paxs on the flights I take are staying in Japan or making other connections. Now when the 787 comes off the production line things should change. That is a smaller aircraft and should break any distance records currently set.

it is still supposed to be secret but united will start direct flights from the west coast of us to bangkok when the new airport opens. problem for united right now is they don't have the gates at DM. when the new airport opens you will be able to buy 1 stop flights from lax/sfo to india via bkk.

Only two airlines, Pakistan International and Eva Air, have so far bought the B777, ordering five between them. It is not yet known whether they will copy Singapore Airlines and install a special cupboard on board in which to carry a corpse, in case anyone dies during the flight. !!!!!

Following snitched from The Times for today regarding the LR trip:-

Only two airlines, Pakistan International and Eva Air, have so far bought the B777, ordering five between them. I

To date 4 Airlines have placed orders or made commitments, PIA, EVA, Air Canada and Air India. The Air Canada order was confirmed and signed yesterday. During the recording setting flight of the new 777-200LR, which should be concluded by now, there were pilots on board from both PIA and Singapore Air.

IMHO, over the next 45-60 days you are going to see several orders for the 777-200LR. I wouldn't be surprised to see Singapore Air place orders, as it is rumored they want to dump their A340-500/600s. We may see a large order from QANTAS by the end of the 1st week of December.

Flew out with EVA 18 Sept. the plane was not a 777-200LR but a 777-300ER according to the Doc's in the back of the seat.

The 777-200LR has yet to enter commercial service.

Flight testing of this new version of the Boeing 777 was concluded October 30th, and the plane is now being outfitted to the buyer's specifications. Its first commercial flight is scheduled for this January, just two months away.

Not a bad idea, but no, I have no connection or association with Boeing.

I've had a life long interest in aviation and when I'm not on Thai related sites, such as this one, I'm on the various aviation sites reading the latest information, mostly on aircraft and a bit about the different airlines.

It could be awhile. The first delivery is scheduled for 2008 and I don't know if United has placed any orders and if they have where Chicago fits into the plan. It only seat about 265 so you won't need to many travelers to fill the planes for a daily schedule out of Chicago.

I would have thought that United would have to exit Chap. 11, order some aircraft and get fifth-freedom rights for pax between Thailand and India before thinking about flying to India via a non-stop through BKK.

 

However, it was nice to note that Bangkok Airways intends placing orders for either the 787 or A350 and starting up European routes........

Bt24 bn for aircraft to serve new routes. Bangkok Airways plans to spend Bt25 billion over five years to buy new aircraft and build hangars, as the company expands the number of destinations it flies to. The airline will use Bt24 billion to buy six aircraft. It is considering mainly the newest models from both French aircraft-maker Airbus and American manufacturer Boeing – the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787..............

 

Prasert said the airline also plans to extend its network to cover the Bangkok-London route in five years, as well as the London-Siem Reap route.

Overflight isn't such a big issue .......... fifth-freedom is a bilateral agreement for an airline to fly passengers into one country from another which is not the airlines home base i.e. United would need fifth-freedom rights for passengers travelling only on the BKK-DEL legs and v.v. If United was competing directly with the Thai non-stops then it would appear difficult to see those rights being given without something in return. I'm sure I read somewhere recently (Investors presentation?) that Thailand's current policy was not to grant any more than fourth-freedoms. Maybe Samsonite or echster could shed a bit more light on it.

News in Pattaya last night showed 777-200 landing in HR-Lon. after nonstop from HK via America, only 35 bodies onboard. IMHO to claim a record the plane should be fully loaded.

United has already been in negotiation with boeing. The 787 was designed for united and united engineers partipated in the design. Nothing will be announced until after United exits chapter 11.

 

The new Bangkok airport is being built as a hub airport. The idea is to compete with Hong Kong and singapore. Thai giovernment thinks there is a alot of money to be made. The idea is to shop it to airlines for thru flights. Thai of course will get priority.

 

United used to fly nrt-bkk-hkg using bkk as a hub. I am not sure why they dropped it probably becuase ther is too much money to be maede flying japanese from nrt to bkk.

You are absolutely correct. Sorry, my mistake. I was calculating at 1.1 mile per nactical mile instead of 1.1516.

My apologies.

There is a rumor that QANTAS has been pushing Boeing to extended the range of the 777-200LR so they can use it for a non-stop service Sydney to London. Perhaps they have decided to do so and it has yet to be announced. Guess we will find out eventually.

I found it interesting that the Jet Stream wasn't discovered until World War II, by a crew on a bombing mission. At first they weren't believed and it was thought it was an excuse for missing their target. ;-)
