Do you have a work permit ?????

If not you can't work

If yes then what area are you skilled in

Do you have a pension from the Army or will you be relying solely on finding work

Do you have a house or not, you can't plan on Maybes

As for pitfalls, there are many, I suggest you join the members forum, where a whealth of information is available that may help you to identify potential pitfalls

Dont go over there blind, or go over there with high hopes of finding a great job.

I think most of us have felt that way after the first 2 trips over to la la land. Your so in awe with it all you just want to bail out of the real world and move over there forever. No cares, beaches, the best girls, you know the deal. Reality is... it does catch up to you with finances and unending issues surprises back home.

If your all squared away and got your 20 or plus in I know youll have a full check coming your way. Thats great!! Dont expect much in the way of your Military Insurance if you get sick. Its a cash only deal and getting worse over there. Great Hospitals!! But reality is starting to catch up on prices...Some insurance works " BUPA" some doesnt. Like alot of American carriers!

With a Military pension youll do just fine. Youll be doing the trip to Cambodia every 3 months or so for a new Visa but who cares..

Please let me know If I can help any further. Been there done that!! All the best to you and Thanks for your Mil. service!! ED

If you really are trying to live there, you probabaly want to apply for the retirement visa. Make sure you have records of financial income, either online or whatever. Making visa runs every few months is not a good idea. If you get settled in, and then get booted out of the country, you won't be happy.

Mail over there is iffy. Strongly recommend you leave an address in the states for important stuff, like checks, financial documents, W-2s, new ATM or credit cards. Have some one bring them with you or you go home and get them now an then. Don't ever put all your mail in one package if mailing it to thailand. Losses or thefts are common.

If you got a military pension, you're set for life but if you expect to make a living in Pattaya, then you're in for deep sh-t. Make your money at home and enjoy your money in Thailand. Becareful with many expats who'll offer you "business offer" that is too good to be true. Lots of farangs will try to take advantage of newbies, just like the bar girls. :bow

For some reason, all the expats on disability  that I met in Thailand are former government employees. Either federal, military, city or state. Why is that?

Con your way into a 50% plus disability pension and you can have a good life in LOS :D

You may think you have it made, but it depends on your life style. Most members seem to agree that to enjoy all Pattaya has to offer you need a monthly income of approx $3500. Yes many do it for less, othere for much more.

You will not be able to find medical care work. But, may find administrative work is a major international hospital.

Several hospitals in BKK accept Tri-Care. If you use the VA you must register for Overseas Services.

Good Luck and enjoy your retirement.
