hi everyone i arrive in thailand on the 1st of april and leave on the 3rd of may . will i need a visa or not? as i have heard if ya stay a little over a month you just pay an over stay on your way out of the country is this true? any info on this would be much appreciated thanks unziped

3 days will cost you 1500 Baht at the airport, BUT...

 

If you get caught by the BIB before you make it to the airport, you could be spending time behind bars.

 

So... go to the immigration office in Jomtien and get an extension before you expire (30 days).

In January 2005 I enquired on this site ref visa and overstays and was told a story about a guy who overstayed expecting to just pay a fine on departure. The police visited his hotel room (don't know if someone squealed on him) and although he was only 1 day over the 30 he was arrested. He had to spend 4 days in a holding cell till he was deported and I would assume cells in Thailand are the real deal.

Don't risk it, get an extension!

I was told by the Thai embassy in London that you can only get an extension if you actually have a visa. I don't know where unziped is flying in from, but from the UK you get a 30 day visa exemption, and there is no way you can get a visa from within Thailand (This is illegal). If you have a 30 day visa rather than a visa exemption, it will only be extended by up to 10 days max.

 

A 60 day visa can be obtained from the Embassy in your home country. The date of entry must be within 3 months from the date of the application.

 

An alternative if you are on a visa exemption, is to do a 'visa run' where you leave Thailand for the day (Day trip to Cambodia) and then when you return you get another 30 day exemption.

 

Hope this all makes sense and assists you in your choice of what to do. (I'm going to the embassy to get a 60 day visa)

All hotels copy the visa or visa exempt and the photo page from passports and I guess they send those to police.

just got my passport back today from the thai consul. 25 Dollars and a postage stamp for being allowed 60 days in paradise not a bad deal. 28 days and wheels up.
