Recommendations for condo purchase?

Recommended Posts

The current situation here is that there is a general oversupply of 'cheap' apartments. Actually the market for 4mm Bht and up Condo's is stronger, which means that you can sell them much easier. The market at the top end- 8mm and up- is the strongest of all.

But this also means that more humble condo's are relatively cheap, so as long as liquidity is not a requirement for you, you can live with this.

Terry from North Shore Real Estate opposite the Jomtien complex is an honest bloke, and probably worth talking to.

Mirkwood's advice is very important. LOS does not have the zoning protections and rules that most of us are used to. If an ocean view is important to you, make certain that no one can build in front of you or block your view. I think the only way to be absolutely sure is that your condo is right on the beach or that is has contruction--ie a pool or whatever in front right on the beach. I am from California :D so an ocean view was a critical part of my decision making process.

it's a different world here in The Gambia. To request something remotely like a SWIFT transfer will be frought with headaches.

So send the money to London until you've found the place you want.

I am imagining a lot of BMs shaking their heads and seeing you heading for a fall.

Slow down. Rent for a while on the interest you get on your capital.

Thanks for the concern, bob 2005, but there are considerable costs involved in sending money by SWIFT to my bank in UK, then sending another transfer from there to LOS. My bank in Gambia charge 1.5% plus a service charge, and I would think that Nationwide would charge similar. That's not to mention the double loss in exchange rate.

4niceight, the fear that the other BM's have with you sending money to LOS is that you may never be able to get it back out of Thailand.

Do you understand that?

So, stop with the odd sounding excuses and find somewhere else to stash it untill you actually need it, or assume the risk of sending it directly to a Thai bank for all eternity. Thailand has just experienced a military coup that is seemingly not too fond of farangs. Frankly, I think it is plain stupid to send your money there, given the volitile and unforseen nature of the place and its general distaste for foreigners.

Get the money from your Gambia account in USD and put it in a suitcase and I will courier it for you to that little bank at the top of Soi 6 (for a small fee) no fees to worry about.
