New to Pattaya...New to Golf

I'm on the threshold of retiring to Pattaya and will need something to do to keep me out of the bars. I have never played golf although I am an avid televiewer. Can anyone give me some advice about how to get started. Cost of 2nd hand clubs, lessons etc.

Go see that parasitic 'Mr Golf' who invented Pattaya Sports 'Charity' (and subsequently himself)....Im sure he'll guide you.

I would suggest that you have a couple of lessons before buying clubs as golf is not for everyone. I would also then suggest that you buy new clubs, if you are retiring and thinking of playing golf regularly it would be better having new gear which should last you several years.

I think it's better to buy a good used set of clubs, any golf course (at least those in the USA) has a PGA Professional who gives lessons (usually $30 for 30 minutes) and can help you pick out equipment. That way you can decide if you really enjoy the game, before you spend alot of money on equipment. The best advice for a beginner is to get lessons, that way you minimize bad habits that can be hard to break later. Golf is a great game, good luck

Congratulations on your upcoming retirement as well as your plan to take up the greatest game ever made. When I took up the game I spent about 6 weeks practicing and taking a series of 3 lessons prior to stepping onto a 9 hole par 3 course. I would definitely encourage you to take lessons from a PGA pro.

 

I believe Doghaus, the forum Pattaya golf guru , can advise you on who and how much in Pattaya. Also, second hand clubs are an excellent idea for a beginner. After you develop a repeatable swing then you could look to be custom fit for new clubs.

I will be pleased to help you with golf advice when you arrive in Pattaya.

 

A 30 minute golf lesson at the driving range with a falang golf pro will probably cost you around 700 to 1000 baht depending upon who you go to. I recommend David Race at Harolds range on soi Siam Country Club - his rates are near the top of this range but he is an excellent teacher. I reckon a series of about 6 to 8 lessons and a fair bit of range time will get you ready to venture on to a golf course.

 

I agree that second hand clubs are the best bet when you are starting. When you get some more experience you can splash out on new clubs. You will be able to pick up clubs in Pattaya but you might get a better deal buying on ebay in your home country.
