Hi Merrin

I will in Los for my 3rd trip in 2 years very shortly and to date I have always used the ATM's to get my cash without a single problem, the exchange rate is normally bettter through an ATM and if you have an account with the Nationwide it is free to withdrawl anywhere abroad.

Hi, all.

Do I need to take much cash with me from the UK if I have a Visa debit card? Is it okay to rely on ATMs?

Thanks,

Ben

You don't need much cash , but keep some as a backup .

It would be wise to bring 2 cards , in case one was stolen or lost , or eaten by a nasty ATM :allright

Have a nice time :)

ATM's are a good secondary source of cash, but I have switched back to using travelers checks as my primary cash source. As other BM's have pointed out, get big denomination TC's ($500 US) and you probably get the best rates.

I stay away from Kasikorn Bank ATM's! From what I recall, a few too many BM's have reported problems with them. They tried to use one of their ATM's, get no cash, but get charged for a withdrawal and seem to have a hard time straightening things out with the bank.

If you are from the UK it is a no-brainer.

Get yourself a Nationwide FlexAccount.

No fees and a consistently good rate which can be found here

If you are worried about using ATMs, use one inside a bank during the day and just take enough cash out in the evening.

Personally, I have not had any problems with any ATMs in Thailand.

Kasikorn was a bad experience with their ATM.

Using a Bank of America atm card I tried to take out 20,000 Baht. Wouldn't let me.

Tried 17,500 ; wouldn't let me.

Same with 15,000 and 12,500.

Then at 10,000 baht it took my transaction

Got charged $1.50 for each of the transactions. Not all their fault, some goes to Bank of America bandits.

Use my credit union atm and there was only the $1 charge from them plus got 17,500 baht.

It seems that many credit unions and financial institutions in the U.S are charging a 1% or 1.5% "international transaction fee". My credit union used to merely charge $1.50 per transaction.

The maximum now in any one transaction seems to be 25,000 baht, subkect to your own bank's limits. However, if the machine has run out of 1,000 baht noted, it will only allow you to withdraw a maximum 10,000 baht. I needed money to pay my rent a couple of weeks ago and had to draw to lots of 10,000 baht to cover it. Fortunately, it was my own bank's ATM so no charges, but my landlord wasn't exactly impressed by getting 20,000 baht in 500 baht notes.
