Hello All,

I'll be returning soon to Pattaya, and plan to get some golf in besides a fair amount of mongering. Please let me know what your favorite courses are within a reasonable distance to Pattaya. I'm a mid-handicapper so I'm not necessary looking for the most difficult courses, but just ones that are fun and are of at least a medium level regarding quality. Also ones with accomodating caddies.... <grin

Thanks for your reply....

Phoenix golf course is only 20 minutes away, excellent course. Has certain days called "Sports Days" where prices are much cheaper. Pattaya Golf club is only about 25 minutes away, course not as good, but nice course for beginners and high handicappers (like me!).

The other thing you can do is go to Lewinski's or "The Golf Club" on soi LK Metro and join a group outing. Provides transportation.

There are quite a few good courses within 30-60 minutes of Pattaya. Phoenix has already been mentioned, but I can also recommend Burapha, Bangpra, and Eastern Star, just to name a few. You can also contact BM Doghaus, as he runs a golf tourism company in Pattaya and has outings to various courses a couple of times a week. The groups usually include a lot of the ex-pats living there, all of whom are great guys to play golf with.

I have played Bangphra which is about 40 minutes drive , beatiful scenic course.

Cost was 1100 green Fees, 500 Buggy ,220 Caddy and about 400 Hire Clubs not particualry cheap but an excellent course.

My mate was speaking to other keen golfers and if you become a memeber of Pattaya Sports Club (300baht) you get big discounts on the Green Fee's.

What is the deal with having both a cart and a caddy? Although I do see the benefits of having a nice TG as a caddy. Is it one golfer and one caddy per cart, or 2 and 2 ??

It used by be OK for 2 and 2 with the caddies riding on the back, unfortunately many courses now require 1 caddy and one golfer per cart.

I sometimes not rent the electric cart and just use the caddy with pull cart. Good exercise, but gets pretty hot out there in the afternoon.

Some courses, i.e.Laem Chaebang, might require an electric cart, not sure. But most don't.

is it standard for thai golf courses to have cart and caddy? i play golf as means of exercise by walking. can i not rent the cart or caddy and just play golf?

On those courses where you either can or must take a cart, your caddy rides along with you. She does all the same things as she would if she had your bag on a pull cart (yardage, reading putts, etc.); the only difference is that the two of you are riding, not walking.

If your question is actually can you dispense with both, while you may want to pass on taking a cart, absolutely take a caddy; not using one is in Thailand practically unheard of. It's not just very inexpensive by western standards, it's also a part of the experience, and trust me: some of these girls can read the greens with their eyes closed and there will be times when you'll need it. My index hovers around a 7 and I still count on my caddy to help me read the greens. In fact, I don't even try to read them any more; I just look over at my caddy and do what she tells me. I learned that lesson pretty early on.

Played Bangpra, bit of a drive but worth it :)

Watch the monkeys, violent little bastards!

The caddies wont win any beauty contests but had a good laugh with them :)

Bangpra has the facility to walk, I did and damn, I enjoyed the walk :) Golf wasn't too bad as well :)

Playing golf without a caddy .... never thought about it over there, I think u would be looked at as if u had grown a 3rd head :bow

Plutaluang - Royal Thai Navy Course near Sattahip. Played a week ago. Total cost for green fees, caddy and cart was 1200 baht. Fairways were not in great shape but the greens were immaculate. Ended up with a guy for a caddy who knew his stuff but smoked the whole time.

Course has 36 holes, North and West nines, South and East nines.

Carts (buggy's) are optional at Plutaluang and also at Khao Kheow Country Club.

With it now being high season prices have been hiked up,which is normal.

I played Phoenix last week and they,ve upped their prices for buggys to 700baht,unfortunately for us they put the price up when we arrived.A big bottle of Singha costs 142baht in the clubhouse.

I'm sure the rest of the courses have pushed prices up aswell but this seemed a little excessive for Phoenix, nonetheless it was in great condition and great to play.

My favourite course at the moment is Burapha,I suppose it's because I've played more there than any other.Emerald and Eastern Star are always great to play too.

Regarding the caddies,I think it's the same as the bargirls ,they change around so often that sometimes you'll go to one course and find some attractive ones and the next time they'll all be uggabluggs. :D

My favourites are Laem Chabang, Burapha, Khao Kheow, Plutaluang and Green Valley.

All golf courses are good and very challenging. Will be there again in a few days and hope to play 10 games of golf during my 2 week stay.
