Well, I'd put it WAY different.

There is no such thing as an "official" shirt or colour. Tom has helpfully listed the traditional/superstitious colours.

Right now, the main colours of yellow and red have been hijacked by the two extremist political groups, and in Bangkok and many other places, idiots now automatically assume that if you wear one of these colours you are on that group's side.

Since both sides are extremist it doesn't matter which is which, you'll get snubbed or even berated or mocked anyhow for yellow or red.

In addition Light Blue (for Friday) has also become a political and controversial colour. You will get That Look for blue in many places. If you don't know what "that look" is, ask any married man.

The other colours are okay, but nobody gives much of a thought to why you're wearing them because they are very minor colours, i.e. we are back at the "no official colour" again.

Cross-cultural side-note of the day: Red is the colour Tiger Woods always wears when he plays on Sundays, as his mother ordered.

Maybe Joe can answer this....

Is a purple shirt the sign of being gay in Thailand? I ask this because once i wore a purple shirt and all the girls ignored me. Later in the night several girls at the bar told me it was because my shirt told them i wasn't interested in a lady.. I went back to the hotel and changed, and the 'hansum man' shouts returned..

Have you ever heard of this Joe?

Yes, supposedly purple is gay among the under-30 set in Thailand. Hell, when I was in school, if you wore yellow on Wednesday it meant you were "a homo". I guess every generation has something.

I know the kids make fun of each other when they wear purple, but I don't think they take it seriously. Anyway, I suppose in Pattaya people might think you're serious. Pattaya is a pretty intensely gay place, so a lot of girls might think you're actually giving them a message. I guess. Now that you mention it, I don't much like purple so I've never actually tested this.

Ish. For the sake of the OP the various members of the Royal Family have their birthday colours incorporated into their personal flags, (as opposed to the Royal Standards which don't change in colour) .......

E.g.

H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX): dark yellow flag with his emblem

H.M. Queen Sirikit: light blue flag with her emblem

H.R.H. Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn: dark yellow flag with his emblem

H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn: purple flag with her emblem

H.R.H. Princess Chulabhorn: orange flag with her emblem

Ish indeed. I was only speaking of commercial shirt sales.

The yellows can get very muxed ip, too, because dark yellow is also Buddhist, red is Tao, various greens are Islam and so on. The FLAGS are official and the colours on those standards are official. But that doesn't mean commercially sold shirts are official. The best you can say is they show respect. The main purpose of the coloured shirts is to make money.

The king by the way MUST be a Buddhist, and thus his (flag/standard) yellow, a different shade from his Monday yellow.

Maybe we should ask MM to get the forum colour coded so questions about T-shirts don’t end up in the HOTEL section.

:banghead :allright
