Congrats to Roy McAvoy for winning the US Open

seems like a nice kid from Northern Scotland,Northern Wales or Northern Britain.Northern Someplace. Or one of the bovine islands,Jersey or Guernsey :clueless .Very composed and very deserving.I sat through all 5 1/2 hours of coverage and there were some hilarious shots on 18 today, including Phil Nickelson who even had to laugh since it was so bad.

LOL,too funny!

Guess you didn't see Tin Cup,circa 1996.The leading character's name was Roy McAvoy!

And if he is just 22,how could he have played in the Open in '96 when he was 7 years old?

God I love this site.People are so quick to pounce.

i think anyone that wins a major at 22 years of age with a record score deserves the respect of at least getting his name right

I just watched the movie (again) yesterday. But tell me, any background on the game of Phil Nickelson? I didn't even know he played?

On the last hole of 4 long rounds,he was in a green side sand trap.He blasts out, over the entire green and into the water on the far side.He had a huge smile, probably because of the shot itself and also it was the last hole of an awful week.

Where was he playing? Not in the US Open, not according to the scorecards and media. Do you have him mixed up with Phil Mickelson?

I'm happy somebody here appreciates it.I watched every minute broadcast all 4 days.I was going to use Nicholson but that would have been too obvious.

BUT NBC got a ration of shit for omitting "Under God" in a piece they did containing the Pledge of Allegiance during the tourney and apologized twice for it.It was still nicely done though.

And "indivisible".

It boggles my mind that some pooyai or some NBC committee sat down and made that particular decision. What are people doing when they make those picayune and very political decisions? And why do they think no one will pay attention? I thought the whole lead-in was a sick piece of treacle anyhow, but once you've decided to serve treacle, why not just serve it? Why rub salt into it? It's a phuocking GOLF game intro, not an Obama advert ferkrighsake. Get on with it or DON'T get on with it.

I have never seen the appeal in golf as a spectator sport. clueless

Please. The correct kvetch is "it's like watching grass grow."

I have to admit I'm a sometimes golf spectator, even though my kid is a pro. But watching a Tiger Woods charge or a McIlroy emerge or even a Greg Norman collapse is enthralling. I went almost two whole days without watching a baseball game because of the US Open.

Well Americans find Cricket, boring, but in both sports, there is more chance of being hit by the ball as a spectator, than if you are actually playing the game.

edited to say, having played cricket and been hit by the ball several times, it is more dangerous to play, than golf.

I have never seen the appeal in golf as a spectator sport. :clueless

Having read this thread, I am even more convinced it is not for me.

I do think, as with many sports, if you play or have played that particular sport you have more interest as a fan. But golf is not the sport I would pick to attend as a first choice. But then again I think American football is a better television game than most seats you can actually get a ticket for - like low corner end zone.

As avid a golfer as I was in my youth and middle age, I did only attend one actual tournament and that was a celebrity pro-am. I have learned a lot by watching golf on TV - from rules to swing and putting tips. And on TV you can see all the action, especially with video delay. At the tournament you are stuck in one place or walk and follow one group or a combination. You can hear the roar from another green when someone does something good and then check the scoreboard to see if someone birdied or eagled, for instance.

These days I only allot time to watch the majors. I am up early to watch the Open Championship from Great Britain, if not working.

Having played the game for so many years I have a real appreciation for how difficult the game is. I am in awe of the skill and distance these pros demonstrate.

Next year the US Open is being held in San Francisco which is only 50 miles away but I won't attend. I will watch it on TV.

C'mon mlc, make it a once in a lifetime thing.I went to the Masters once for 2 rounds and that was a great experience.

I much prefer to watch and attend LPGA events.

Whatever sport women play is much closer to the level of any sport you and I play.Plus, they are far more attractive than the men.And more accessible too.

Have you noticed, as you get older, the balls you play sport with get smaller ?

I have played little golf and midlife is right, you have to have played a sport to appreciate seeing it played well, by someone else. I can enjoy watching someone get out of the sand and hole the ball from a distance- Good shot sir !

When I watch first class cricket, ( I have never paid to go to a game ) I enjoy watching a good spell of bowling by anyone, regardless of the country, or county they represent.

Same goes for football. 45mins of running about, does take some cardiac fitness. :bow
