ok, first off, thanks to everyone for their help on my "what to bring the mammy" question. now i need your help again, it turns out as well as teraks kid living with the folks she also has 2 nephews living there too, the 3 kids are boys aged 2and a half, four and fourteen.

my question is, what do thai kids play with?

am i safer to bring western toys or to buy in los?

or would they be like their granny and prefer money :whistling:

any help or advice from anyone who has had dealings with thai kids would be greatly appreciated

All I can say regarding the kids is shorts, shirts, blouses, dresses, underpants, school socks and school shoes, a new school bag to put them in and a few bags of jelly sweets....All bought in Big C or Tesco Lotus when you get here and put in a carrier bag you brought with you from your home country.... :chogdee

Oh, come ON, how to be a really unpopular uncle: Give clothes.

School bag not bad, sweets kind of unimaginative. Sports stuff is good - balls, badminton sets, that kind of thing. Very cheap. Those cheap little electronic handheld game thingmys would be appreciated by boys - couple hundred baht.

Not clothes. Yucko.

When I replied to the mum thread I said that I didn't know where in Surin they were going ... village or city,,,neither do we know the income..I have lived in several Thai villages in Surin and Central Thailand over the last 16 uears and I can assure you toys will be played with and either forgotten or destroyed within a week but the kids will be dead proud of their new clothes showing off to their friends etc....but perhaps you are right..I don't know..

Yes, the OP has posed this same question in two different places. I also asked him where he was going, and also asked him what he wanted to spend. My main suggestion was to ask his teelak what the kids might like, what they like, what they play with.... No answer, so the best we can do is give suggestions what kids want.

You have to be REALLY careful with clothes there, Mr Frog. *Special* kinds of clothes they can show off is different from "just clothes". Show-off clothes good, another white shirt and pair of shorts bad. I suggested maybe a football kit, which would be special clothes -- IF the kid is into football, and if it's "his" team. That sort of thing, very good, I'd think. But we can't know as well as teelak.

joe, i posted a question about the gfs mother here before but i have never asked this question anywhere else, maybe you have me confused with someone else.

the gfs family live in a village very near the disputed temple on the thai/khmer border, im not sure what their income level is but am presuming its not a lot

also i am aware the gf would know best but i want it to be a surprise for her as much as for the kids and i will buy a few fotballs or similar in los but i was hoping to get something to bring something from home too,

thanks to the previous posters , i have a few ideas now although a few more would go down a treat too,

cheers guys

No, it's definitely my error, BUT it's also very weird. I saw this request, and I answered it - but I don't see my answer. I assumed it must have been in the mammy's thread, but you're right, I'm wrong - sorry. My post got sent to Mars instead of the forum, somehow. Bummer, it was a serious reply.

Anyhow. You should beat around the bush a bit with your teelak. How old are the kids, what do they like to do, do they play sports, do they like to wear dresses, who's their favourite team, are they real boys or sissies - and so on. Just make a conversation. One thing that's pretty universally popular, kids and adults, is a badminton set which is laughably cheap on the street. Get 4 racquets, an extra tin of birds. You can set it up anywhere, even easier than soccer.
