Do they really do Grouper in batter?

When I want Grouper I go to the Chinky/Thai place on the corner of Chaiyapoon (sp?) and Third Road. Absolutely delicious. In fact all the food they serve is delicious and of course at sensible pricing for Pattaya.

I have brought TGs to eat there and they all said it was very good food. You probably all know the place, I'd be surprised if you expats had never eaten there. Not atall fancy just delicious food.

I like the food there but never noticed any Chinese influence.

I'm no expert on Thai food but just looking at the signage of the place it appears to me to be a Chinese-Thai type establishment. I don't even know the name of the place because there's no signage in English. I've eaten there dozens of times usually alone but the food seems alien to the Thai (Isaan) Girls that I've taken there. As I said, they do like the food.

It's like the Thai equivalent of an English cafe. No nonsense, good food at a good price.

Edit: I don't feel that I explained it well. They're not serving up Chinese food but Thai food by Chinese/Thai people.

I believe so.

I hear various Fish and Chip shops or places for Fish and Chips being recommended but to be honest it is a meal 'off my list' now for some time. For exactly the reason you suggested.....good old cod, or grouper is expensive and something cheap gets substituted in many places and you end up with some insipid mush inside the batter. I like the meaty flakes of grouper, but even at my Thai restaurant, where I used to have a freshly killed whole one steamed I am less likely to order it due to the way the price has gone. The snapper is inferior.

I find the Parrot Fish to be the best of the fresh fish available in these "chippies" if available, but it too is fairly expensive. I find the cod available in Thailand to be utter crap, typically frozen for way too long, and miniscule in size (no thickness). Even the dreaded Birds Eye could produce better. Normally I would wait until I'm back in the UK for my Fish n Chips, but the Missus really likes it . :clueless She agrees that the Dory is crap too. I'm not sure why the Snapper is as bad as it is in Pattaya, 'tis normally a fairly good substitute for the cod/haddock around the world. Edited by Fatboyfat

I thought I had reasonable 'cod' in Goosie's once. A lot of other places you might not know what 'fish' is in the fish and chips and its rather a difficult question to get across to the staff. Often you get a thin fish (it might be large but no thickness) which is soft and I really don't like it. I believe many UK chippys are substituting their cod with something else too.

I've been meaning to give Neeroy's a try. For my preference, I prefer Chow Soy to Gooses, Jolly Friar or Punch and Judy...all of which I have tried and failed to enjoy.

The quality at Chow Soy does vary a bit too much. I've been disappointed there on occasion, but still go back hoping for a good one.

I have tried Gooses after reading much about it here over the different posts and would simply class it as rubbish mostly greasy batter and expensive. As for the jolly friar not much better except on price. Now Neeroy's is as an eating place very reasonable and good food ! I miss the place on Soi Bukahow opposite the market and tonys complex for good thai food ! I used to love the red thai curry there now I have a very similar one in Neeroys.
